Job overview

St Paul’s Cathedral School, set within the iconic grounds of St Paul’s Cathedral, is seeking an innovative, highly organised and motivated Deputy Head Academic to join our thriving school.

The Deputy Head Academic will be instrumental in, and responsible for, enabling the strategic development of the curriculum and standards in all academic matters, working closely with the Head, as part of a collegiate Senior Leadership Team and in supporting the Governors in the shared vision of the school.

Supported by an Assessment, Exams and Data Analysis Officer, the Deputy Head Academic will be able to balance the needs of whole child education helping young people to thrive not just at St Paul’s Cathedral School, but for life, along with evidence-based practice. The successful candidate will understand the subtly of leading an academic programme where exams are one of many outcomes and not a goal to the exclusion of all else, and be fully committed to their own CPD.

See job specification and person specification for more details.

The incumbent Deputy Head Academic has created a vibrant and supportive community of learners, both pupils and staff, and this post has come available due to their retirement. The opportunity comes at an exciting time in the School’s history. It has just completed a major building project and £8 million investment in its estate and is increasing the numbers on roll over the next two years.

The successful candidate will continue to promote and enhance the school’s love of learning, enabling staff and pupils to excel in all they do.

The school is full, and in high demand, with circa 260 children on roll. Within that number, the school is also the boarding residence for the Choristers of St Paul’s Cathedral, one of the world’s finest cathedral choirs. Although the Deputy Head Academic will not be directly involved in the boarding element of the school, it would be an advantage for candidates to have some experience of a boarding school environment, or at least be in sympathy with the demands this can bring.

The Deputy Head Academic is part of the Senior Leadership Team and will work closely with the Head and others on the SLT to ensure that the school continues to be a great place to work and learn.

The successful candidate will have a reduced teaching timetable, and will be joining a fabulous academic team which embraces new ideas, collaboration, hard work and creativity. We welcome applicants from any subject field.

You will be very well organised, enthusiastic about teaching and learning, keen to continue to develop your own professional skills and have the drive to work collaboratively towards the school’s continued success.

The right candidate will be a qualified teacher, with demonstrable experience at leading a department or may already be part of the leadership team in their current school.

Working in a friendly, warm environment, you will be involved in the whole life of St Paul’s Cathedral School.

Our parents are genuinely supportive and the salary is competitive.

If you think this could be for you, then please complete the TES application form. You are also very welcome have an informal chat with the Head, Simon Larter-Evans.

Call us on 020 7248 5156, or email Clare Morgan at headspa@spcs.london.sch.uk to arrange.

Closing date for the applications is Monday 21 February and interviews will follow soon after. We reserve the right to make an appointment before the closing date.

Further information about the school can be found at:

http://www.spcslondon.com/

Completed applications must be made via the TES portal.

St Paul’s Cathedral School is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.

Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Baring Service

About St Paul's Cathedral School

St Paul’s Cathedral School is a co-educational, Church of England, independent preparatory day school for around 250 children aged 4-13, located in the City of London. It has boarding provision for St Paul’s Cathedral boy choristers, who sing daily at the cathedral, from the age of seven. From September 2023, girl choristers have begun to sing in the cathedral.

The school is owned by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral; its governing body is made up of five Canons and seven lay members, who are chaired by the Dean. St Paul's can trace its origins back to the 12th century and it existed for several centuries solely to educate the cathedral choristers. It has been co-educational since 2002.
