Job overview

A rare opportunity to join the Senior Leadership Team at a leading London Prep School.

Deputy Head to start September 2020

St Paul’s Cathedral School, set within the iconic grounds of St Paul’s Cathedral, is seeking an innovative, highly organised and motivated Deputy Head to join our thriving and collegiate school. Deputising for the Head in their absence, the Deputy Head will be responsible for the day to day running of the school, staff development and pastoral care and will be the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

See job specification for more details.

The opportunity comes at an exciting time in the School’s history, as it completes a major building project and increases its role over the next three years.

The successful candidate will continue to drive the school’s love of learning, enabling staff and pupils to excel in all they do.

The school is full, and in high demand, with circa 260 children on role. Within that number, the school is also the boarding residence for the Choristers of St Paul’s Cathedral, one of the world’s finest cathedral choirs. Although the Deputy Head will not be directly involved in the boarding element of the school, it would be an advantage for candidates to have some experience of a boarding school environment, or at least be in sympathy with the demands this can bring.

The Deputy Head is part of the Senior Leadership Team and will work closely with the Headmaster and others on the SLT to ensure that the school continues to be a great place to work and learn.

The successful candidate will have a reduced teaching timetable, and will  be joining a fabulous academic team which embraces new ideas, collaboration, hard work and creativity. We welcome applicants from any subject field.

You will be very well organised, enthusiastic about teaching and learning, keen to continue to develop your own professional skills and have the drive to work collaboratively towards the school’s continued success.

The right candidate will be a qualified teacher, with demonstrable experience at leading a department or may already be part of the leadership team in their current school.

Working in a friendly, warm environment, you will be involved in the whole life of St Paul’s Cathedral School.

Our parents are genuinely supportive and the salary is competitive.

If you think this could be for you, then please complete the application form. You are also very welcome to come and visit us, or to have an informal chat with the Headmaster, Simon Larter-Evans.

Call us on 020 7248 5156, or email Clare Morgan at headspa@spcs.london.sch.uk to arrange.

Closing date for the applications is Monday 9 March 2020 and interviews will follow soon after. We reserve the right to make an appointment before the closing date.

Further information about the school can be found at:

Completed applications need to be returned either by email or by post to the school office at the following address:

About St Paul's Cathedral School

St Paul’s Cathedral School is a co-educational, Church of England, independent preparatory day school for around 250 children aged 4-13, located in the City of London. It has boarding provision for St Paul’s Cathedral boy choristers, who sing daily at the cathedral, from the age of seven. From September 2023, girl choristers have begun to sing in the cathedral.

The school is owned by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral; its governing body is made up of five Canons and seven lay members, who are chaired by the Dean. St Paul's can trace its origins back to the 12th century and it existed for several centuries solely to educate the cathedral choristers. It has been co-educational since 2002.
