Job overview

Do you want to join a very strong academic team, teaching science to motivated pupils with high aspirations?

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Chemistry Teacher to further develop their career within our thriving Science department, supporting the Head of Science to lead and manage the delivery of the Chemistry curriculum to aspirational and highly motivated pupils.

As Deputy Head of Chemistry, you will take on a range of operational planning and team management tasks, whilst creating a challenging and stimulating classroom climate that will motivate pupils to learn, think independently, take risks, empathise with others, perform to the best of their abilities and fulfil their potential.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and inspirational teacher with an excellent record of teaching science/chemistry at secondary level. Experience of teaching a second science or other subject taught within the school curriculum will be advantageous.

As well as delivering excellent classroom teaching, all staff at Emanuel undertake a pastoral role as a form tutor and get involved in the wider life of the school through co-curricular activities and outreach programmes. You can find more detailed information about roles within the school in our 'Working at Emanuel' guide.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
