The Royal School for the Blind is an incorporated registered charity managed by a Committee of Management who are its charity trustees under powers contained in the Act of Parliament 10 George II Chap XV dated 1829.  The Charity delegates the duties of Government of its School to a Governing Body.

The Charity's School is an Ofsted Outstanding, non-maintained day and residential special school for children and students with visual impairment and learning difficulties ranging from moderate to profound. Many have additional sensory, physical or behavioural needs. The ages if the young people range from 2 – 19 years old.

The Charity will strive to promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural development within an environment of mutual respect and sensitivity.  It will provide life skills of the highest quality whilst valuing all young people as individuals, worthy of dignity and respect.  The Charity takes pride in its happy, caring, stimulating and safe environment, promoting independence.

The Trustees wish to appoint for January 2017 a Deputy Head of School to be responsible for:

  • To be responsible for the development of the curriculum model;
  • To be a member of the SLT, contributing to the School Development Plan and Self-Evaluation;
  • To lead and effectively monitor and evaluate standards of learning and curriculum provision;
  • To be responsible for schemes of work;
  • To implement strategies and support staff to ensure the highest standards;
  • To ensure methods of assessment, recording and reporting impact on pupil progression;
  • To lead work with the Assistant Heads in charge of other delegated key stages and responsibilities;
  • To represent the School at meetings
  • To act as Quality Nominee for all external and internal examinations/awards
  • To lead and coordinate the school’s CPD strategy and INSET
  • To lead the operational management of the school;
  • To provide, if required, any out of hours support/advice/overnight sleep-ins for residential provision
  • To lead the marketing of the School
  • To carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in the current School teachers Pay & Conditions document, and as subsequently amended, and those specified by the Royal School for the Blind.
  • To chair meetings on behalf of the Head of School as required.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Qualified to degree level with QTS as a minimum. It would be desirable to be working towards NPQH.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding legislation and procedures
  • Experience of performance management and appraisal systems
  • A range of experience in both specialist and/or mainstream schools
  • Good organisation skills
  • An ability to differentiate work for mixed ability groups
  • Technically capable in ICT
  • The ability to lead strategic change/intervention programmes to ensure ALL children succeed.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a range of professionals
  • Ability to lead and coordinate INSET
  • An outstanding classroom practitioner with the ability to demonstrate what this looks like.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good motivational skills and leadership qualities
  • A flexible adaptable approach to teaching
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to prioritise
  • To be accountable and hold other to account.
  • A genuine desire to participate fully in the life of the Charity and to work as part of its forward-thinking team of professionals.
