Deputy Head of Year (Non-Teaching)

The London Academy of Excellence intends to appoint two Deputy Heads of Year (Y12 & Y13) to begin mid August 2021.

The Deputy Heads of Year (DHOYs) will work closely with our Heads of Year and Assistant Heads, within our existing pastoral structure. Their core work will be to drive forward the standard of student conduct, the consistency of attendance and punctuality and the quality of pastoral care.

In fulfilling this role, the successful candidates will model the values of the school in being academically ambitious, committed to endeavour, having a strong sense of community and being consistently reflective.

Key responsibilities

Student conduct

To support the school in maintaining high standards of conduct from all students through the effective delivery of behaviour systems.

Attendance and punctuality

To support the delivery of strategies to support excellent punctuality to school in the morning and to lessons throughout the day and take responsibility for supporting the improved attendance of persistent absentees.

Pastoral care

To assist the delivery of high quality pastoral care within the school.

Administrative responsibilities

To fulfil administrative duties that are fundamental to the effective management of the year group:

For year 12, this would be the administration and management of the co-curriculum.

For year 13, this would be the administration and management of the UCAS applications process.

Specific tasks to achieve the above

Student conduct

Be publicly visible in modelling high standards of behaviour through completing duties with diligence and enthusiasm around the school, setting the tone for how students should conduct themselves in corridors and other shared spaces, such as the library and canteen.

Hold students to account on instances of misbehaviour as directed by Heads of Years (HOYs).

Conduct parent meetings and maintain regular communication for families of students whose conduct is of concern.

Support the weekly analysis of behaviour data using our Management Information System (Bromcom) to ensure that HOYs, tutors and teachers are well informed about the students in their care.

Supervise impactful detentions as directed by HOYs.

Supervise study spaces, including the library, maintaining the high expectations necessary to sustain an academic environment.

Attendance and punctuality

Complete all tasks required for the academy to maintain outstanding standards on attendance and punctuality, as directed by the Pastoral Support Lead and HOYs.

Ensure that all morning and afternoon registers are complete and accurate for your assigned year group on a daily basis.

Follow the academy systems for following up on instances of lateness, absence and truancy on a daily basis.

Support the weekly analysis of attendance data to ensure HOYs, tutors and teachers are well informed.

Lead on the delivery of strategies to improve the attendance habits of persistent absentees.

Communicate regularly with parents and carers to share concerns in regards to attendance and punctuality where appropriate.

Pastoral care

To be proactive in responding to concerns raised about students in the assigned year group.

To be a reliable member of the safeguarding team, to protect the safety of our students and promote their wellbeing.

To take responsibility as a mentor for a target group of students who may benefit from a structured program of support to improve their organisation and study habits, their social skills, or their self-confidence.

To contribute to the delivery of the school PSHE program.

To contribute to aspects of the tutor program, and the co-curriculum.

Where needed, to provide cover for tutors and run effective tutor time sessions.

To provide accurate records of all safeguarding interventions on the academy database - Myconcern.

To complete duties as directed by any member of the academy safeguarding team.

Administrative responsibilities

DHOY Year 12:

To create and maintain a database of all co-curricular options being offered to year 12 students.

To allocate all Year 12s to an appropriate club or society, and community project on a half termly basis, and communicate these allocations to all students and staff efficiently.

To design and manage an optional after-school sports program, and track attendance to it.

To ensure that all students attend their co-curricular options without fail, following up by using the academy behaviour systems where appropriate.

DHOY Year 13:

To ensure that the progress of all Year 13s towards making effective UCAS applications is satisfactory, by tracking deadlines effectively, and responding to students that have fallen behind.

To proof-read, check and verify the information that students enter into UCAS throughout their applications.

To follow-up with staff members that have been asked to write references for students.

To provide support for students pursuing apprenticeships and other non-traditional post-18 options.
