Derwent Lodge is seeking to appoint an inspirational and exceptional Deputy Head Teacher to lead on whole school management from September 2018. They will be part of a senior management team, including a Curriculum Co-ordinator and Juniors Co-ordinator. Derwent Lodge is an IAPS girls’ prep school of 140 pupils, which is part of The Schools at Somerhill, including Yardley Court boys’ school, and the Somerhill Pre-Prep. We have over 600 pupils on our beautiful site in Kent.

The successful candidate will already be an excellent classroom practitioner, who will be able to contribute to the development of our Leadership Team. Working directly alongside the Deputy Heads of The Schools at Somerhill in a collegiate approach, you will have the ability to ensure the day-to-day smooth-running of our busy school. 

This role is one where you must provide clear leadership, challenge and support to others and you must have the capacity to do this in a way that is professional and motivates your colleagues.   You will be confident speaking to parents and the wider school community and will also possess excellent written skills. The right candidate will be flexible and willing to contribute to our extra-curricular programme.

The successful candidate will be someone with management or Head of Department experience, who has the ability to inspire, challenge and motivate our community.  Pastoral care will be your passion, with the intention to become the school’s safeguarding lead, with appropriate training if necessary.

About Derwent Lodge School

Derwent Lodge is a family school with a happy and friendly atmosphere. The school is noted for its high standards of work, manners and courtesy. All pupils are encouraged to develop poise and confidence, enabling them to relate to their peers and adults in a natural and unassuming way. An emphasis is placed on caring for others. Each child is encouraged to do their best, to work with determination and to be proud of their achievements.

The curriculum places a strong emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy and is designed to challenge each individual. A well established programme of clubs and activities  takes place during lunch breaks and after school, playing an important part in widening their experiences and developing new interests. We have a highly rated sports department and we believe that every child should be given the opportunity to participate in sport. Music and Drama are also strong and the girls enjoy their involvement in many concerts, soirees and productions. Art is an area of excellence and much of the children's work is displayed around the school.

Girls can take the 11+ examinations for entry to Kent Grammar Schools or the entrance and scholarship examination set by various Independent Schools in the area. The Headteacher takes a close interest in the progress and wellbeing of all children and is readily available to meet with parents to discuss any aspect of their daughter's education.
