Job overview

Appointment of a Deputy Head

For April or September 2018

Millfield School is one of the UK’s leading independent schools, educating 1,200 boys and girls aged 13 – 18 (and 1,700 including the Prep School) in rural Somerset. Situated on a world-class and constantly evolving campus, Millfield’s diverse generations of pupils experience an all-round academic, sporting and cultural education and are encouraged to excel in all that they do.

The newly appointed Head, Gavin Horgan, who takes post in September 2018, seeks an exceptional pastoral leader to join Millfield as Deputy Head. Reporting directly to Mr Horgan, the appointee will act as the driving force of a values-led, pupil-centred pastoral system, and will play a key strategic role in the development of the wider strategic direction of Millfield. For senior leaders aspiring to headship, this post offers an ideal opportunity to contribute to a rapidly evolving, ambitious school which will be as exceptional academically as it is in sport and the arts.

The appointee will be a dynamic and collaborative educator with the academic credentials, pastoral vision and leadership qualities to inspire the entire Millfield community. He or she will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and a deep commitment to all-round education. A passion for boarding, and the ways in which academic tutoring, learning support and pastoral care can be even more closely interwoven is required, as is an educational philosophy which places the happiness of the student at its core. Millfield is a world-class school and this is your chance to be part of its development.

The modern world is highly competitive and the way we prepare our children for its demands is more important than ever. Young people today are subject to great pressures and it takes strong personalities to avoid the traps that life has lying in wait. Hence a good school must seek to develop confidence and maturity in all its pupils whatever their strengths and weaknesses.

All individuals have different needs and therefore a variety of opportunities must be available to enable each one to achieve success. They must learn to apply themselves to academic work but must also be encouraged to express their other talents.

With its outstanding facilities, a staff:pupil ratio of 1:7.5, an extraordinary range of academic courses and the unrivalled strength of its extra-curricular programme, Millfield strives to achieve all these aims. It also seeks to move with the times whilst maintaining the important traditions of good manners, discipline and respect for others.

We pride ourselves on the richness and diversity of the Millfield experience as well as the friendly atmosphere within our community.
