Job overview

Blessed George Napier is a popular, over-subscribed, Catholic school in North Oxfordshire with an excellent reputation for both academic achievement and student welfare.   The school is part of The Pope Francis MAC which is a successful and growing Catholic Multi Academy Company situated in Oxfordshire.  Our schools stretch from Thame, just north of the Chiltern Hills, to Banbury and Chipping Norton, on the edge of the Cotswolds.

Reporting to the Headteacher the Board of Directors, in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Birmingham, seek to appoint a practising and committed Catholic Deputy Headteacher. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the school’s senior leadership team and will work with a highly skilled and committed team of middle leaders and pastoral staff, in securing outstanding behaviour and attitudes across the school, including safeguarding, inclusion and attendance.

This is an exciting time to join our school as we complete our new build and plan for future expansion.  This project will provide a new teaching block, including three new science labs, a Sixth Form area and a new purpose-built assembly hall accommodating the whole school community – something which is very important to us.

As a MAC we believe fundamentally in the education of the whole child, each of whom is unique and made in the image and likeness of God.  We are committed to working together as one family across all our schools and we recognise the importance that strong leadership plays in achieving this.  Our approach to continual professional development and collaboration between the leaders in all our schools reflects this vision.

The successful candidate will:

• Be a practising Catholic

• Be able to deepen and strengthen the ethos and mission of Catholic education

• Have a clear understanding of how to develop, improve and enrich opportunities for all pupils

• Be a caring and inspiring leader with excellent interpersonal and communication skills

We will offer:

• A community with a strong Catholic ethos where everyone is valued and cared for

• A leadership team committed to securing the best for all our pupils and staff

• A supportive Governing Body with a wide skill set and a strong commitment to continual improvement

• Pupils who want to learn and to succeed

• Strong supportive links with parishes and other schools in the area and beyond

• Opportunities for personal and professional development.

About Blessed George Napier Catholic School and Sixth Form

Blessed George Napier School is first and foremost a Catholic school where we live and learn and develop as a faith community.

We are a Sports College and since 2007 have Higher Performing School Status and our second designation are in Maths and Computing.

BGN is a Roman Catholic School which aims to be an extension of the Christian home to help parents bring up their children in the Christian tradition. We believe that the religious ethos will be found across the whole school curriculum.

The "ethos" of the school is built upon the principle of equality of opportunity for all, and:

• The fact that it is a caring Roman Catholic community which seeks to appreciate and develop the individual talents
of all its members. It follows that there has to be an awareness and recognition of the value and uniqueness of
each individual within the school and a positive effort to develop this uniqueness.

• The recognition that the school is part of a much wider community in what has to be clearly seen to be an active
partnership with pupils, parents, parishes and wider communities. It is vitally important that parents and pupils
should be encouraged to become positively involved in every aspect of school life. We have an obligation to
recognise the contribution made by the parishes in supporting the school and we must seek ways of giving
something back from the school community to recognise this commitment. In preparing our young people for life
after school we must make every effort to incorporate outside agencies in the planning and implementation of
teaching content. There has to be active involvement in the work-related curriculum and we must be aware of this
  involvement in all our planning.

• The obligation on us to prepare our young people to fact the world with confidence and take up the challenge of the
Gospels. This requires us to equip our charge with the life skills necessary to take a fully active part in society. We
must promote individual talents, skills, interests, abilities and responsibilities to help pupils fulfil their potential. Our
concern is for the "whole person" and recognises the special needs, strengths and weaknesses of each individual
within the BGN community by providing help and caring support and the spiritual guidance necessary.

In spiritual terms, we must all be involved through positive Christian example in instilling in each individual an awareness, understanding and practice of the Catholic Faith.

In academic terms, we must help each individual to realise these ideals in a positive way through preparation for, and entry to, examinations at an appropriate level in terms of ability and aptitude.

In social terms, we believe that each and every pupil needs support, care and assistance by whatever means possible. Central to this is the right of every pupil, no matter what the circumstances to her or his good name.
