Job overview

Deputy Headteacher

September 2020

(Salary Scale L20-24)

Varndean School is an 11-16 school with around 1400 students, set in a picturesque south coast location in the vibrant and diverse city of Brighton and Hove. We are a Good (Ofsted 2017) and well-established school already, and we have made rapid progress over the past couple of years and have no intention of resting on our laurels. The potential here is immense and the successful applicant will have a key role in our vision to develop World Class Learning.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, committed and outstanding Deputy Headteacher with a passion for education. Varndean operates a system of four small schools within one larger school – the small school approach. The position advertised carries the status of Deputy Head and the specific responsibilities will be based on the strengths of the successful candidate.

The post would suit candidates who are ambitious for Headship; four previous incumbents have moved to substantive Headteacher posts and one to CEO of a Multi Academy Trust. We are a lead school in the Pavilion and Downs Teaching Alliance and there will be opportunities to work across Brighton and Hove and beyond.

Our four small schools each have a busy and productive school base and part of the role is to provide excellent leadership to one of these schools as well as providing an appropriate level of strategic support to the Headteacher as he goes about developing the small school approach to modern education.

If you would like to visit the school for a tour before hand please contact us via email at vacancies@varndean.co.uk. We currently have a tour planned for Wednesday 18th March at 1.30pm.

The closing date is 9am on Monday 30th March  and the interviews are currently scheduled for Wednesday 1st & Thursday 2nd April - All interviews have currently been postponed and will be rescheduled when the school is back open

Varndean School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to have a staff body that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake

The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Varndean School has a proud history. It has undergone many changes to bring it to where it is now; starting life in the centre of Brighton in 1884 and moving to its current site in 1926. Since then the school has evolved into a vibrant and diverse co-education comprehensive school with a population of over 1400 students and nearly 200 staff which represents the local community it serves.

Varndean School is a place where people matter. We believe that individuality is very much an internal quality that we foster and encourage through the widest variety of learning experiences.

Our broad curriculum promotes academic rigour so that our students can stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers nationally. Varndean is one of the top performing secondary schools in Brighton and Hove. We are committed to creativity and have a huge passion for music, performance, the arts, sport and anything that challenges and encourages participation.

Our opportunities for extended learning are second to none with our arts provision, successful sports teams, the largest cohorts of DofE in the South East as well as our extensive enrichment and entitlement curriculum. We are the first state school in Brighton and Hove to become a  Directly Licensed Centre for DofE.

Varndean is a great place to learn and develop, in friendly, smaller and supportive environments. We are a really happy school where student relationships with each other, and staff, are excellent. We have a well established smaller school system each with its own identity: Angelou, Russell, Turing, Ellis and Lennox. Each school has a Head of School, a Deputy Head and a School Leader.

We have the highest aspirations for all of our students supported by highly trained and motivated experts in their fields. Our staff are the mainstay of our community. We provide huge opportunities for professional development and have a history of real success in creating visionary leaders and excellent practitioners. As working parents, partners and professionals, our Senior Leadership Team understand the stresses and pressures of professional life and our inherent Wellbeing Programme evidences our commitment to our staff as people, not just employees.

Varndean is set in a beautiful landscape overlooking the sea, at the heart of the vibrant and diverse Brighton lifestyle. We relish the cultural and creative opportunities that our city has to offer and we give back just as much in return.

Varndean is a school going places; we are not resting on our laurels. We look at every aspect of what we do and reflect on how to make our professional practice, our learning and our environment better. Ours is an exciting journey and we would be delighted if you would like to join us.
