Are you motivated to work in a school where the vision is to always put the individual needs of the students first? Are you enthused by the prospect of supporting an ethos of inclusion, compassion, individuality and seeing the good in everyone?

We are looking to appoint a versatile and talented senior leader to the post of Deputy Headteacher in our unique day and residential school, which caters for boys aged 9 to 19, who are primarily diagnosed with ASC and experience other complex needs such as PDA, ADHD, dyslexia and Dyspraxia.

Breckenbrough is a picturesque non-maintained special school set in the heart of North Yorkshire with 60 students on roll. As a school with a Quaker ethos, we pride ourselves on our shared values of equality, respect, tolerance, honesty, forgiveness and conflict resolution, as we strive to attain the best outcomes possible for all our students.

If you have a genuine love of learning and an appreciation of how a nurturing and caring environment can support all children to grow into happy and successful individuals, you would make a great addition to our team.

The successful applicant will:

• Work alongside the Headteacher to support and develop strategic initiatives and drive forward continuous whole school improvement.

• Play a key role in the Senior Leadership Team, with particular reference to personal development and behaviour, monitoring and analysing outcomes, monitoring the quality of education and leading on curriculum development.

• Have experience of school leadership in either special and/or mainstream settings, including managing the staff performance and professional development.

• Have proven high quality experience of supporting students with a range of complex needs. Knowledge of successful strategies for meeting the needs of young people with autism is essential, as is an understanding of behaviour and strategies to support students with high levels of anxiety.

• Be a professional individual who is prepared to work flexibly in a vibrant, caring and supportive environment, with students who really appreciate a staff team who are reliable and compassionate.

We would encourage potential applicants to arrange a visit to the school or make arrangements for an informal discussion about the post prior to making an application.

Breckenbrough School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

What makes us special?

Like our students, Breckenbrough is unique; offering a bespoke, special school approach in delivering the national curriculum.  We pride ourselves in being a ‘specialist’ school, providing a nurturing, supportive and low stress environment to help our students learn to manage their behaviours and make social and academic progress.

We aim to support our students to achieve two key goals during their time here:

  1. To be themselves, aspire and be successful.
  2. To develop strategies and coping mechanisms to move towards a level of self-actualisation in order to thrive in the neurotypical world.
