Job overview

Thomas Tallis School is a big, challenging, 11 – 18 Local Authority comprehensive school.  Our 2,000 students come from all walks of life.  We pride ourselves on being a happy school and on treating everyone with humanity and respect.   Staff are thinkers and learners who share their knowledge and expertise with colleagues and at the same time inspire students through a love of teaching.  Our students are happy and vibrant and our “feel” is exciting.  Our motto “education to understand the world and change it for the better” sums us up.

As Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral) you will lead this critical area in the school and play a key role working alongside other high quality colleagues as part of the school's senior leadership team.  You will need to be both strategic and systematic.  A rigid, zero tolerance approach won't work here – more subtlety is required.  Your work will have a direct impact on the effectiveness of the learning environment and as a result, on outcomes.    Above all, this will require exceptional interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.  In return we can offer an environment where you will learn much on your journey to headship.

Our school is exciting and interesting – our philosophy is inclusive and founded on respect.  If you feel this fits with your own value set and you have a track record of leading change and improvement that fits with our need, then this might be just the role for you.

Located in Kidbrooke, south-east London, Thomas Tallis School is a large co-educational secondary school providing places to pupils aged 11-18. The school was originally founded in 1971. In 2012 it moved into a brand-new purpose-built building on the site of a former airfield.

With capacity for around 2,000 students, Thomas Tallis is larger than the average secondary school. It operates a large sixth form, welcoming students who have come up through Thomas Tallis School, as well as pupils from other schools in the local area.
