Deputy Leader of English

Required for January 2020

Full time

United Learning Salary Scale Applies – up to £41,528 depending on experience plus TLR 1a (£8066)

This is a rare opportunity as a Deputy Leader of English in a large department, leading on improving the quality of teaching and learning that impacts positively on student outcomes.

Do you love inspiring young people to recognise the real value of English to their lives now, and for the future?

Are you looking for a post that offers you real input and opportunity into where your career goes next?

Are you looking for a school where you’ll have the opportunity to develop and flourish in your own practice and directly impact on the practice of others?

We want to offer you the opportunity to “grow your own” career move as we look to strengthen our English team with an experienced, dedicated and passionate teacher.

We’d like you to have a proven record of excellence in your own teaching, indicative of creative, challenging and engaging teaching (using Rosenshine’s principles of direct instruction as desirable) that gets the very best progress from students. In addition, you need to be ready to lead and develop others, using a range of strategies that help to grow and sustain excellence in others’ teaching.

We believe that every child has the right to an education and that all children deserve to have their personalities, talents and skills developed to the full.  We’re a Rights Respecting ‘Gold’ School, one of only 12 in England. The positive relationships and atmosphere this creates at The Regis permeate through daily school life, is described in our most recent inspection as the ‘heartbeat’ of the school. It is what focuses us all on why we went into teaching.

We offer staff the opportunity to work in a school that has a robust behaviour and rewards policy that enables ‘trouble free’ teaching, and being part of a large team on an exciting journey from good to outstanding. As a school and through the academy trust we offer excellent CPD and progression opportunities, enhanced salaries compared to national, and many other rewards such as childcare discounts in our nursey, half price gym membership and car leasing schemes to name a few.

We are a big school. About 1600 students and nearly 200 staff. You would be joining a large team of English staff, supported by a HLTA and a TA. With a suite of modern teaching rooms, an intervention room, our own team room and great resources, English are well equipped to contribute to the school’s ambition to offer an outstanding education to the students we serve.

We are looking for:

• QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree

• An enthusiasm for education and desire to make a real difference to the lives of children

• Strong student outcomes at GCSE through effective teaching pedagogy

• The ability to teach English to A-Level (desirable)

• Leadership or coaching experience focusing on improving teaching (desirable)

There is an open invite for you to come and see us because we appreciate that, in teaching, moving to a new school is a significant decision and you may have questions to ask prior to applying.  We are convinced our young people will sell this opportunity better than anything you can read on a website, so we encourage you to come and meet us all. Mike Garlick (Principal) is happy to discuss the post and the school with you either in person or by phone.  Our recruiter, Richard, is happy to arrange this for you. richard.lanning@hays.com / 01273 729465.

Closing Date:  9am, 21 October 2019

Interviews: 24 October 2019

The Regis School is part of United Learning, a unique group of independent and state schools working together to achieve the best in everyone.

Our vision is to provide an excellent education so that all young people are able to make a success of their lives and, if we are to realise this vision, we need to make sure we attract, develop and reward the key ingredient, our high quality, hardworking staff.

The Regis is a school that we all feel proud of and our teachers are passionate about their work. We know that teaching can be a challenging profession, but with the support we offer and a commitment to seeing the best in each other, we work tirelessly to find creative ways to educate. We have access to a Group-wide curriculum, an intranet platform that enables sharing of resources and opportunities for work shadowing and mentorship.

The Regis School is a secondary 11-18 school with over 1600 students on roll. We are an inclusive comprehensive school that aims to achieve the best for every student.  This philosophy is reflected in the successful Sixth Form of 160+ students who are offered a broad range of academic and vocational programmes.  Over 70% of our students progress to Higher Education each year.

The Regis School has a well-qualified, dedicated supportive and enthusiastic staff team. We have approximately 200 staff, all of whom are committed to providing the best possible education for our students. As one of the biggest employers in Bognor Regis, we emphasise the learning of adults and young people. Staff are involved in further study, research projects and in the training of teachers in partnership with local universities.

The school boasts superb facilities in all subject areas.  Each teaching area has audio-video facilities and a range of ICT suites throughout the school provides access to specialist equipment.  All teachers have a laptop provided, to support teaching and administration.

The Regis School aspires to be an outstanding centre of learning, serving its community and transforming lives. We seek to equip our students for a changing world through building confidence, encouraging creativity and fostering enquiry to achieve excellence. These qualities will allow our students to flourish as leaders of the future and to take their place as caring, ambitious and responsible citizens in their communities.

Academic achievement is at the heart of what we do, ensuring students leave with the highest qualifications that enable them to be competitive in the global economy.  We have a strict behaviour policy that enables teachers to teach in classrooms that are mainly free from disruption. Students who prevent others from learning are given a single warning, then learn elsewhere in the school under the supervision of senior staff.
