Job overview

As a popular, expanding and over-subscribed British-curriculum school, we seek a SECONDARY DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY TEACHER to start in September 2017.

ABOUT US

Al Basma British School has been established within the city of Abu Dhabi for more than 15 years with a loyal student and parent community. Since September 2014 the school has been operating from a new location in a brand-new building. It is a thriving international school delivering the English National Curriculum to around 1400 students. Currently, there are classes from FS2 to Year 10 however this will eventually expand to Year 13. Design & Technology classes are taught in a specialised lab.

We believe that education should be exciting and fun, based on inquiry, investigation and problem solving activities that prepare students for life in this complex and changing world. The school aspires to create a global community of thinkers, creators, innovators and leaders who will have a positive impact on the world of tomorrow.

‘Al Basma’ is Arabic meaning ‘The Smile’. We pride ourselves on being a Happy School where students and teachers enjoy coming to school. Our well-behaved students and supportive parents originate from over 54 countries which makes us a truly international community. The campus boasts excellent facilities including technology-enabled classrooms, multi-purpose hall/auditorium, 25m swimming pool and specialist teaching areas.

We follow the National Curriculum of England according to the new 2014 framework and latest methodologies. Therefore, through continuous professional development, teachers will have every opportunity to grow professionally as opportunities for internal promotion arise regularly. The school also offers a rich and exciting variety of enrichment activities including sports, performing & creative arts, aeromodelling, robotics and rocketry.

Al Basma was recently inspected in February 2017 by the Abu Dhabi Education Council following a similar process and rigour to Ofsted. We are pleased to announce that the school was placed in Band A – ‘a high performing’ school. The inspection identified the following as key areas of strength:

  • the impact of school leaders on improving standards
  • continuous improvement to the education that children receive
  • the very strong relationships within the school as shown in students’ good behaviour, positive attitudes to learning
  • the quality of support provided for students who have special educational needs
  • very effective management of the day-to-day life of the school
  • students’ appreciation of the heritage, culture and future vision of the UAE

The school gained BSO (British Schools Overseas) accreditation in May 2016 following a successful inspection. This places us in an exclusive organisation of around 250 schools across the globe. In addition, the school is fully accredited with British Schools of Middle East (BSME), Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), Edexcel (Pearson) and AQA (Oxford).

The school is located in a very quiet and safe neighbourhood of Abu Dhabi near to the international airport. Most teachers are accommodated close to the school which is next to a brand-new shopping mall (http://www.deerfieldsmall.com/). Yas (https://yasisland.ae/) and Saadiyat (http://www.saadiyat.ae/) islands are 10 minutes from the school by car or taxi offering endless opportunities for leisure. Dubai is only a 45-minute drive which offers its unique type of entertainment.

Al Basma teachers have developed a very supportive community both in terms of professional duties and recreational activities. Teachers new to the school will be greeted with a warm smile and kind spirit which is critical when travelling to a new country.
