Job overview

We require a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher to join a lively, successful and popular department for a maternity cover commencing in February 2018.

The Design and Technology department at Chigwell offers a broad and exciting curriculum that aims to develop pupils’ knowledge and awareness of contemporary design and technology. The successful applicant will have the skills, energy and enthusiasm to enhance the teaching of Design & Technology at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level. The applicant should ideally have a background in resistant materials, engineering or product design. The D&T Department currently has a bias towards Resistant Materials at Key Stage 3 and at GCSE and A level. Experience of using CAD/CAM would be essential.

This is an excellent opportunity for an inspirational teacher with determination and a sense of humour to participate actively in a forward-looking department. The successful candidate will be given as much opportunity as possible to gain valuable experience, both academically and pastorally. This appointment could suit a recent graduate or someone wishing to gain further teaching experience in a highly academic school.

Chigwell School is located in the picturesque village of Chigwell just 10 miles from central London and on the Central Line. Close to the edge of Epping Forest, we enjoy over 100 acres of beautiful grounds. As well as being an academic school, it has a growing reputation, locally and nationally, for its sport, music, art and drama. We endeavour to provide an all round education to girls and boys from the ages of four to eighteen years. Pupils are enthusiastic, co-operative and able, and colleagues get on well together. There is a well-developed sense of community.

We are predominantly a day school but there are some 25 Sixth Form boarders who are mainly from overseas; from sixteen different countries. They add a real international flavour to our community.

Teaching staff are supplied with a laptop computer for teaching and administrative purposes. The successful applicant will be appointed on to the main national salary scale (incorporating London Fringe). There is an additional scaled Chigwell Allowance and a competitive benefits package.

Further details can be found on the School website (www.chigwell-school.org).

Application is by a form which can be completed online or downloaded from our website (select Vacancies) and submitted to the Headmaster’s PA: hmpa@chigwell-school.org not any later than Monday 16th October 2017.

Closing date: 16th October 2017

Chigwell is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers, prohibition orders and enhanced DBS.

Values and vision

Chigwell School’s motto is: “aut viam inveniam aut faciam”, a Latin phrase which means literally, “Either I shall find a way or I will make one". In-keeping with this, the school wants its students to develop a “determined, independent spirit, taking responsibility for themselves, their relationships with others, and the world around us”.

The school defines its mission as aiming to cultivate a learning community that aspires to excellence in all aspects of life, including: spiritual intellectual, moral, cultural, social and emotional aspects.

Chigwell School aims to provide a rounded education in the broadest sense, encouraging pupils to develop and discover talents and interests across and beyond the curriculum in order to help them to play a full part in the life of the school, and go on to make a positive contribution to the world.

The school hopes to be a community in which pupils develop a love of learning and are challenged to think critically, and with creative curiosity, for themselves.

ISI report

“Pupils’ personal development is excellent throughout the school. They are tolerant and appreciate non-material aspects of life. Pupils display maturity and they respect others, regardless of background or personal characteristics. They have highly developed cultural awareness and a developed understanding of British characteristics.”
