Departmental structure:
The Design Technology Department consists of two subject areas: Design Technology and Food Preparation and Nutrition
Each class at KS 3 has a Learning Support Assistant who is shared between the two subjects
Group sizes:
The maximum numbers of pupils at KS3 level will be five as each Form Group consisting of a maximum of ten pupils are divided into two groups that take Food Preparation & Nutrition and Design & Technology at the same time (one double lesson per week)
Each KS3 class has an hour lesson of Design & Technology
At KS 4 the group sizes vary according to subject choices at the end of Year 9, but maximum group size will be seven pupils
Curriculum:
At KS3 level the main focus is on learning through multi-sensory lessons to gain an understanding of theory through practical skills
The Programme of Study for Year 7, 8 and 9 is linked to the new 2017 Specification Design & Technology GCSE.
At KS 4, the Edexcel specification is followed over the course of the two years
Equipment and facilities:
Design & Technology is accommodated in a specialist teaching room
Assessment and monitoring:
Pupils are assessed on a weekly basis through class and homework tasks
Pupils have completed project work marked for folder and practical content
Pupils write one formal internal examination during the Summer Term
Summary of responsibilities:
To have due regard to health and safety policies in the department, and to carry out risk assessment as and when appropriate
To teach Design & Technology KS3 and at KS4 to GCSE
To assist in the assessing and monitoring of provision required for pupils with individual learning needs in D&T
To maintain a current and informed understanding of recent changes and developments in the teaching of D&T
To assist the Head of Design & Technology & Food Preparation and Nutrition in the development and management of D&T
Some technician duties such as to ensure that displays and equipment are maintained in sound working order
PERSON SPECIFICATION & SELECTION CRITERIA:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Qualified teacher status with appropriate training for teaching Design and Technology (desirable textiles teaching skills)
Experience of teaching D&T at KS3 & KS4
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of recent developments in the teaching and assessment of DT
Ability to record, monitor and assess student progress and attainment
A commitment to equal opportunities teaching and an understanding and commitment to strategies for addressing equal opportunity issues through the teaching of Design and Technology
Ability to use teaching and learning strategies to raise achievement
Competence in the use of Information Technology within the D&T curriculum - experience of CAD/CAM would be beneficial
The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing
