Job overview

St Mary’s Calne offers an academically enriching working environment within the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, with easy transport links to Bristol, Bath and London.

St Mary’s Calne is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistress’ Conference (HMC); it is a leader in the field of girls’ independent boarding education.  It has around 360 girls aged 11-18, including 120+ girls in the Sixth Form. As well as innovative teaching, learning and scholarship, St Mary’s Calne offers outstanding pastoral care and a vibrant, warm community.

Ethos

St Mary’s Calne believes in excellence in all respects.  As a school community, we thrive amidst a culture of strong expectations and the education which we provide nurtures and develops the concept of high performance.  The principal aim is to develop well-rounded pupils who are equipped to excel as adults.

Extra-curricular opportunities beyond the classroom are a vital and integral part of life for girls at St Mary’s Calne.  These opportunities are woven into the timetable during the day, in the evenings and at weekends.  We believe that both boarders and day girls benefit from all aspects of the strong boarding ethos of the school.

Opportunity

St Mary’s Calne is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Art graduate with excellent inter-personal skills to lead and manage our outstanding Art department. In addition to being able to teach Art from Year 7 to Year 13 and supporting the preparation of portfolios for applications to Foundation courses, we would expect the successful candidate to have experience in leading and managing a team of people and in organizing Art related events and exhibitions. A willingness to continue to lead on and facilitate the School’s Artsmark verification would be advantageous.

Our nationally recognised Art Department follows a traditional Fine Art curriculum that embraces modern technology, without losing sight of the essential skills and disciplines that create confidence and build success.

This dynamic, sector leading department concentrates on nurturing the skills of drawing in all its guises, as an integral response to the development of an idea from concept to realisation of intentions. Painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography are the building blocks for a strong foundation in which to explore and develop a personal response to the visual world. Critical study also plays a huge part in understanding the cultural heritage and contextual tradition of the pupils' work.  It is our role to inspire, challenge and support every student.

Pupils are also encouraged to take part in workshops with visiting practitioners and to visit museums and galleries independently, in addition to the trips that are on offer locally, nationally and internationally.

Exhibitions take place at the end of each year with an annual display around the School on Founders’ Day. Pop up shows also take place during the school year. We also have a triennial London Exhibition, where in recent years Anthony Gormley, Endellion Lycett-Green and the Head of Sotheby’s worldwide have been our guest speaker and awarded prizes.

About St Mary's Calne

St Mary’s Calne is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, a happy, purposeful and flourishing community of around 360 pupils with a 80% to 20% boarding to day ratio.

Our Sixth Form is flourishing and highly successful, with over 120 girls. The girls benefit from exceptional careers advice and work hard to achieve their goals. Their academic results are outstanding and the girls go on to study at top UK and American universities; the striking range of courses they embark upon shows the wealth of choice available to our pupils. Many of the Sixth Form also undertake extensive pieces of independent research in the form of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), with 100% achieving A*s last year.

Our strategic plans for the next few years include the following:

  • To build on and develop a high expectation and success culture amongst pupils and staff.
  • To continue to develop and strengthen a fully integrated education for each girl which responds to her individual needs.
  • To develop a cutting edge curriculum and extra-curriculum that anticipates and responds to the needs of the workplace and life in the 21st century and allows girls to develop their agility of mind, their independence in learning and their adaptability.
  • To develop school structures, systems and facilities to support and enable our curriculum aims.
  • To ensure the high profile of St Mary’s is recognised in the local, national and international community.
