The Opportunity

The Director of Development and Alumni Relations has overall responsibility for setting and delivering Taunton School’s development strategy and embedding fundraising and philanthropy throughout the School’s community and beyond.  Central to this is a comprehensive major gifts programme to build, maintain and enhance the relations between Taunton School, and potential major donors in support of the school’s short and long-term development goals.

The Director is responsible for cultivating and raising principal gifts for the School and for stewarding existing major donors through face-to-face meetings and regular communication.  The Director also has overall responsibility for the School’s alumni relations programme ensuring that it continues to evolve to meet the needs of alumni whilst taking account of best practice.  

Reporting to the Headmaster, the Director will be a member of the school’s Senior Policy Committee and will report to governors by setting up and running a Foundation board and by regular reports to governors meetings.  The Director heads up the development team and is responsible for ensuring it meets its strategic objectives and specific targets to deliver philanthropic income.  The Director will have line management responsibility for the team including mentoring and career development of its members as well as recruiting new staff.

The Director is expected to set up a Development Committee (and serve at its secretary), and take the lead role in all key strategic decisions relating to the area of alumni and development.  The Committee will consist of the Headmaster, COO and other senior staff.

The Director will be a committed and motivated fundraiser who can recognize the opportunities and challenges associated with the role.  S/he will have had success securing gifts of six and seven figures and will be adept at building strong, effective relationships across the school’s community, from governors, parents and alumni to academic and support staff at all levels. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished leader in either education or a comparable field, and will possess the drive and vision needed to grow an ambitious and innovative Development programme.

The successful candidate will be a creative thinker with a strong sense of integrity and a values-driven approach to philanthropic fundraising.  As well as a proven record of accomplishment in securing major philanthropic gifts, s/he will bring experience of developing inspiring campaign messaging whilst establishing robust systems and processes, expertise in relationship management, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the presence and intellect to operate at the highest levels.  Above all this individual will have a passion for the aims and ethos of Taunton School.

The Package

Location and remuneration 

An excellent remuneration package is on offer for the post of Director of Development and Alumni Relations.  The package reflects the seniority and significance of the position and includes fee remission and relocation support if needed.  The role will be based at Taunton School, Staplegrove Road, TA2 6AD.

Annual leave – 30 days plus public holidays

Death in service insurance of 4 x salary 

Pension – membership of the school’s support staff defined contribution scheme with The Pensions Trust.  Employer contribution of up to 7.5%.

Private health cover under the scheme in place at the time (currently BUPA)

Standard working week – 0830 – 1700 Monday to Friday plus attendance at events which might take place at evenings and weekends.  The post holder would be expected to work the hours necessary to fulfil their duties and the school is happy to discuss flexible working options.
