Job overview

Developing Our Family

We know a lot can be said with just three words. Three words can hold depths of meaning beyond anything pages of prose can convey. ‘Developing Our Family’ are three such words.

Inspiring Learners and Changing Lives

The new role of Director of Development and Strategy has been designed to help us continue developing the TKAT Family for years to come. In recent times, we have come together like never before; our Head Teachers tell us that the support we give our schools is second to none. In support of our ongoing focus on continuously improving Teaching and Learning, we have developed a number of exciting trust wide initiatives, such as the ACE programme (A Champion for Everychild), Metacurriculum design, Readers are Leaders and Wellbeing that have seen enormous improvements around learning for our most vulnerable children.  Alongside these we have recently launched a new Leadership development programme for all our senior leaders, which is already receiving fantastic feedback. We have always said that we’re ‘a bit different’, but there’s never been a more exciting time to be part of the TKAT team.

We are now looking for someone to lead the next chapter of professional development and strategy realisation across the trust. This will include oversight of the Learning and Development Network; trust-wide strategic projects designed to eliminate barriers to learning for our most disadvantaged children; strategic and practical curriculum support to our schools; promoting and enabling everyday flexibility of working and to develop our leadership teams beyond what may have previously been considered their potential.

Roles in TKAT ask for passion, understanding, teamwork, empathy and, above all, a genuine love for the profession. As part of the Trust’s SLT, this role offers the kind of rewards you can only find from improving the prospects and life chances for literally tens of thousands of children and young people.

If you can talk to us about your experience in supporting school improvement, your strategic approach in leading professional development across an organisation, your ability to work as part of a close-knit team and your demonstrable impact as a leader, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

If you would like an informal discussion about the role, please email Claire Lee, PA to the CEO, at claire.lee@tkat.org to arrange a suitable time.

Safeguarding

TKAT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. Offers of employment will be subject to the full Safer Recruitment process, including an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Our Commitment - Equal, Inclusive, Diverse

TKAT is committed to inclusion, diversity and equality of opportunity by encouraging and welcoming differences, listening to individual experiences, aspirations and accomplishments and learning how to grow better together. We welcome applications from all suitable candidates, regardless of any protected characteristic; this includes applicants wishing to work flexibly.

Access to interview

Should you be selected and invited to interview please let us know if you require us to adapt the interview environment. If we can accommodate practical workplace adjustments to assist we will.

How to Apply

Prospective candidates are welcome to make an initial application by, sending a CV and covering letter to hr@tkat.org or via the ‘Apply’ link on this page which will ask you to complete a TKAT application form, but please note that all applicants who reach the Longlisting stage will then be asked to complete a full application form if they have not already done so.

About The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT)

TKAT prides itself on its high quality of school to school support, our commitment to continuous professional development for both teaching and support staff, our unique approach to earned autonomy for our headteachers and our hands on approach to working with and developing the schools within our academy chain.

We take pride in the support that we offer and want all our students to:

  • be happy
  • be creative and innovative
  • achieve academic success
  • develop their interests and talents
  • be confident, independent and motivated individuals

The Trust operates primarily in the South of England and our central services are organised to ensure that there is effective support to schools across the areas of Educational Support, ICT, Finance, HR, Health and Safety, and Governance. Our experienced and highly supportive educational and operational teams ensure that our schools are effectively supported.

A Brief History:

  • In 2002 the Headteacher of Kemnal Technology College (KTC), John Atkins, together with his staff, started supporting schools.
  • In 2006 John was made an NLE and the Governing Body of KTC decided to form a charitable trust to oversee the support of the schools involved with KTC.
  • By 2010 there were 5 secondary schools within The Kemnal Trust.
  • In June 2010 The Kemnal Trust became The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT). The 5 schools under its umbrella became Academies and TKAT extended its work to include primary schools. It soon became clear that both primary and secondary schools have much to learn from each other and can be mutually supportive.
  • John received a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday 2013 Honours’ list for Services to Education
  • TKAT is now one of the largest multi-academy trusts in the South of England with over 41 primary and secondary academies in the TKAT family covering Essex, Kent, Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, and Hampshire.

Our Charter:

A charter is a set of principles and commitments. This charter sets out the commitments that TKAT will make to our Academies, staff and pupils. These commitments will guide our decision-making and support us all through our future development.  As part of our commitment to you we commit to:

  • Respect, honour and promote your identity
  • Believe and empower
  • Inform you
  • Listen to you and
  • Support you

We want our Academies to be proud of their membership within TKAT, proud of the value they each add and proud of the positive impact they have on all who pass through our education system. We want our relationship to be founded on trust, openness and respect. We believe that by making these commitments to you and defining our relationship, we will continue to give every individual the best chances in life.
