Job overview

With Ofsted now confirming our secondary schools as ‘Good’, Pontefract Academies Trust is on an exciting journey of improvement and growth.

We are looking for a high-achieving and driven leader to help us drive the English curriculum and student performance across our Trust and its two secondary schools.

We want someone who is thoroughly passionate about English and is outcomes focused. Someone who has the drive and energy to continue our work and strategically lead a Trust wide English curriculum that will secure top level outcomes at the end of KS4. We are looking for a successful Head of English (or an exceptional Second in English who has a track record of greater success and greater scope and responsibility than is ‘typical’) with a strong presence; someone who is ambitious for the pupils, their colleagues and the schools. We are looking for someone who, along with our recent appointments at the same level in maths and science, has the strategic, operational and interpersonal skills to work cross school and phase.

For the right person this could be the career opportunity of a lifetime. You will be working closely with an Executive Leadership Team that has driven transformational change in outcomes across the Trust within twelve months of taking the reins. You will have real input to strategy and success, and you will report directly to the Executive Director of Secondary Education.

This post would be ideal for anyone with successful English leadership experience, with ambition and drive, a clear vision of what constitutes excellence in a large school department and who sees a wider leadership position as the next step in their career.  The unique Trust makeup of six primary schools in a tight geographical hub, feeding in to our two secondaries, presents opportunities to help shape English skills and outcomes across children and young people in the town.

We offer:

• Full support from a dedicated, inspirational and approachable leadership team.

• Trust wide approach to CPD, best practice and systems development.

• Real career development, advice and a platform towards further career success.

For a full pack including application forms please visit www.directorofenglish.co.uk or e-mail our advisers ASD Ti on gm@asdti.com or telephon e ASDTi on 07736 775776 – they are available evenings and weekends as well as during the working day, to help you make the right choice.

Closing date for applications:  Wednesday 16th October 2019 at 11pm

Interviews are scheduled for the following week: w/c 21st October 2019

This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Pontefract Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

‘Leaders at all levels have high expectations… Pupils make good progress overall… They are polite and show good attitudes to their learning.’ (Ofsted – The King’s School)

‘The leadership of teaching and learning goes from strength to strength. Teachers are full of praise for the training that is helping them improve their teaching. Weekly meetings help all teachers, including those newly and recently qualified, to develop their teaching repertoire further and learn from each other. Staff morale is high.’ (Ofsted – Carleton High School)

Pontefract Academies Trust is a cross phase Multi Academy Trust comprising of nine schools: seven primaries and two 11-16 secondary schools. We are a medium sized family of schools all located within Pontefract. We educate over 3500 children and young people across the town.

The Trust has undertaken a change management programme with a focus upon accelerating the performance of all our schools. The progress to date has been strong but there is more to come. Our collective work has seen one of our secondary schools shift from special measures to being rated good for the first time since 2009. In addition, in 2019 our six primary schools delivered their best SATs outcomes at Key Stage 2 in their history. Consequently, the Trust is in a strong position on which to build. We are honest about our progress as a Multi Academy Trust and whilst we have made great strides recently, we are humble enough to admit that we may not be where we want to be currently and there are things we can do better.

We believe that we have a strong, yet simple mission and vision as a Trust.  We have a set of guiding principles that steer our daily work. It is not over ambitious to say that we aim to create something transformational in our schools in Pontefract. We want to be joined by people that share a passion for improving social mobility and who want to make a difference day in and day out. Our children and young people need the skills and qualifications to operate in an increasingly competitive global workplace. To this end, as educationalists, our role in improving the life chances of the children and young people in our communities should never be underestimated.

The ambition of the Trust is shared by our group of talented and highly dedicated support staff, teachers, leaders and SPRB members at our schools. We are equally grateful to our pupils and parents for their support and commitment.
