King Harold Academy is a school with a clear and ambitious vision: to become one of the kindest, hardest-working, highest-achieving schools in the UK. We are a proud community school with incredible students, supportive parents and talented, committed staff members.

Expectations at King Harold are extremely high. We live by a clear set of values that drive everything we do:

o Kindness

o Ambition

These values shape all aspects of the work we do: the curriculum we teach, our behaviour policy, our teaching framework, our enrichment programme, our approach to teacher wellbeing, our interactions with parents and students – everything we do.

King Harold Academy is a rapidly-developing, growing secondary school. It is an exciting time to come and work with us, to be part of a team who are building a school that transforms the life chances of young people in the community, with ambitions to become a beacon of excellence in the educational sector.

Members of our teaching team love working at KHA. We work closely together, reward and recognise each other’s hard work and successes, and pride ourselves on the quality of our professional development. All of our staff run clubs and enrichment activities, and next year we'll be making this part of teachers’ allocation of lessons, because we are committed to building strong relationships and developing well-rounded KHA students, who leave us with more than just qualifications.

As Director of Humanities, you will be part of our Extended Leadership Team, shaping your vision for an outstanding department and curriculum. You will lead a talented team of Humanities teachers who are determined, hard-working and incredibly invested in the success of our students.

We are looking for someone who loves teaching Geography and other Humanities subjects (History, RS, Sociology), believes passionately in their academic importance, and can build a team to deliver an inspiring, transformative curriculum. We would like our KHA scholars to be empowered and inspired to go on to further study in the subjects at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country.

The post is an opportunity to make your mark as a senior leader in a rapidly-improving school, and take your career to the next level. You will join an exceptionally talented middle and senior leadership team, and learn a huge amount about educational leadership and school improvement.

If you’re interested in playing a leading role in building a school community that provides a transformative education for its students, then King Harold Academy is an exciting opportunity for you.

● The ability to develop a highly ambitious, inspiring Humanities curriculum

● The highest aspirations and expectations for all students, yourself and our school;

● Aspiring to progress their career.

   develop your career at more than one TKAT academy;

The secondary school, situated in Waltham Abbey has approximately 630 students on record. It is part of The Kemnal Academies Trust, along with 40 other primary and secondary academies.

Formerly known as King Harold School, King Harold Academy converted to academy status in 2010 and was identified as good by Ofsted in 2016.

The primary focus of King Harold Academy is the continual development of teaching. Pedagogy trumps everything. It is our belief that when teachers love teaching students love learning. To this end we have take innovative approaches to developing teaching practice which is rooted in, and informed by evidence of "What works". Our philosophy of teaching is underpinned by Professor Rob Coe's statement that "Learning happens when you think hard". Together, across subjects and experience we work tirelessly and collaboratively on our pedagogy.

Because of our insistence on teaching that challenges, our students are; studious, hard working, resilient and resourceful. They know how to learn and they realise the importance of "thinking hard". Visitors, including OFSTED comment on students abilities to struggle and overcome difficult tasks; "Teachers ask challenging questions of pupils and receive detailed explanations".  "Pupils are challenged to think for themselves and explain their learning in a range of activities"
