Job overview

About the role:  The Leigh UTC and Inspiration Academy have a rare and exciting opportunity to appoint a Director of Learning for English to continue the work of the current post holder in leading the highly successful faculty from April 2018, or from February if available. We are seeking to appoint an individual who can build a rapport with our students and engage them in the subject as well as leading and inspiring an established and collaborative team.  We consistently provide excellent career opportunities for those who demonstrate ambition and drive. This position is initially offered as a one year maternity contract but please rest assured that accommodations will be made to retain our appointee past the end date of the maternity contract within a role to continue CPD and progression opportunities, either within the English remit or across the wider academy.

Teaching English at The Leigh UTC and Inspiration Academy:  The English Learning Area at The Leigh UTC has been identified by Ofsted as a ‘strength’ and is committed to the sharing of best practice between colleagues.  It is a supportive and enthusiastic team, the members of which always go the extra mile to support students. The Inspiration Academy offers key stage three teachers and exciting opportunity to build a brand new curriculum that highlights the power of cross-curricular learning and allows students to engage in a range of literature and language experience from the beginning of their secondary school lives. All year 11 students are entered for both English Language and literature and the Learning Area has just introduced IB English Literature and Language at year 12, a course that will increase in popularity over the next few years. The approach taken ensures very good outcomes for students across the ability range and guarantees a supportive, friendly and developmental team.

What are we looking for in you:  We will expect you to successfully plan and deliver outstanding English lessons on a daily basis that both challenge our students and significantly advance their learning.  We anticipate you will achieve this by being passionate about your subject and transferring your knowledge in a creative and efficient way in the classroom. We also expect our successful applicant to have prior management/leadership experience.

It is imperative that our appointed candidate fully immerses themselves into the culture that we have adopted at The Leigh UTC which is focused on collaborative teaching and learning. At the Leigh UTC, we realise the significance of literacy and English in delivering successful STEM education.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust you will also be offered the opportunity to collaborate with your peers both within the academy and across the whole Trust.  This is an important part of our vision as we know through experience that we perform better when we work together.  You will also be expected to undertake regular self development to continue your professional development and hopefully progress further within the organisation.  Please consult the Job Description and Person Specification by clicking here for more information on the responsibilities and expectations of this position.

Working for the Leigh UTC and Inspiration Academy: Having opened in September 2014 with state-of-the-art facilities, The Leigh UTC provides an exciting, innovative, business-led, problem-solving curriculum throughout Key Stage 4 and 5, enabling students to achieve relevant work-related qualifications and transferable skills for future training or employment. The most unique feature of The Leigh UTC is its business ethos that are emphasised by our students' behaviours and supported by our sponsors.

The Leigh UTC has a clear vision to be a distinctive education provider for outstanding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning.  Our newly built centre of excellence enables young people from the region to learn from a personalised curriculum, which emphasises the practical application of academic and vocational learning. Through our specialisms we will raise standards across the UTC, expecting all students to excel.  We will develop the next generation of ‘world class’ engineers by inspiring them passionately through a diverse curriculum delivered by a combination of Higher Education sector staff, Business entrepreneurs and UTC staff.

Diversity at our core:  As a Trust we are passionate about diversity and recognise that as individuals we all bring something unique to the role regardless of age, gender, race, beliefs or disabilities which is why we treat all of our people equally, without compromise. As a Trust we feel it is important to hire for the right attitude which is why we look for teachers that are enthusiastic, focused and resilient to the day to day pressures that teaching brings.

The academy is committed to safeguarding children and successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

At The Leigh UTC, we create opportunities for meaningful collaboration for staff, we provide a respectful working environment and we encourage innovation from every member of our team. Our Principal, Governors, teaching and support staff believe wholeheartedly in creating opportunities for lifelong success for our young people and believe that exam success is just one aspect in achieving this. We deliver amazing experiences for students whilst not compromising on outcomes. Our teamwork allows us to be greater than the sum of our parts - join us to achieve more than you thought possible.

Curriculum is king and we do things a little differently to other schools or colleges because we believe the most effective way to educate our students is to make our learning more hands-on. With the International Baccalaureate Middle Years programme (MYP) at KS3, GCSEs at KS4, and A-levels, T-levels and the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme (IBCP) at KS5, our ambitious curriculum offer caters for choice, leading the vast majority of students into STEM-related careers or courses.
