Job overview

About the role: The Halley Academy has a truly unique opportunity and are seeking to appoint a Director of Learning for Maths - the department has been led by an experienced and highly successful leader who has made real impact within the department and wider school. The current post holder is relocating and moving into a role of more seniority, hence the role is now available. This role allows an exceptional Maths practitioner to move into a leadership role with strong foundations already in place but with the scope to put their own stamp on it, and receive fantastic support and CPD opportunities across the academy and wider Trust.

At the Halley, we have an established Maths team that works closely together to plan and deliver an engaging and extensive mathematics curriculum. Offering Middle Years Programme at Key Stage 3 and International Baccalaureate at Key Stage 5, we are looking to develop individuals to have both outstanding foundations in traditional mathematics and also a real-world understanding of its applications. We want to develop the learner as a whole to ensure pupils are reflective in the work they are doing.

As part of our STEM-based learning approach, problem-solving and employer links are at the heart of learning. With this approach we take pride in being extremely successful in all of our maths courses that we offer, boasting outstanding results in GCSE maths, Core maths, GCSE Resits, AS maths and Further maths.

With the recent changes in GCSE and A-level, we have ensured that all our staff are sufficiently prepared, by encouraging them to attend relevant professional development related to mastery and problem solving. Our department is fully equipped with practitioners that are engaging in the most pioneering developments in mathematical teaching, and even leading professional development in Core maths to other centres. We have members of staff that are accredited PD leads for NCETM and Casio graphing calculators. Staff have also attended courses led by MEI and FMSP such as Teaching Advanced Maths, Teaching Further Maths, Teaching Statistics and GCSE Problem solving.

If this sounds like an environment within which you would like to work, apply to join our team from September 2020.  The duties and responsibilities associated with this post are in line with the National Teaching Standards.

Working with The Halley Academy:  The Halley Academy has a long and illustrious heritage being the first purpose-built comprehensive in the UK in the 1950s.  We became part of Leigh Academies Trust in early 2018, a highly successful multi-academy trust offering a wealth of opportunities to all of its staff and students to collaborate, develop and grow.

The Halley is a vibrant academy on an exciting journey of rapid improvement.  We are a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme in Post 16 and the IB Middle Years Programme in Key Stage 3. We are a diverse community where everyone is valued, respected and trusted, where we all work together to achieve and celebrate success.  Students thrive within a culture of high aspiration, with no cap on ambition, building the skills to lead healthy, happy and successful lives.

Our dedicated staff are the most important factor in transforming lives and delivering the best outcomes for every student. Every colleague has access to a wide range of professional development opportunities, tailored to the individual depending on aspirations and key areas of interest.  We are seeking to appoint talented and ambitious individuals with a tenacious mind-set to join The Halley Academy for September 2019.

Being part of Leigh Academies Trust:  As of 1st January 2019, our Trust is comprised of 23 geographically organised academies (11 secondaries, 11 primaries and 1 special) educating over 15,000 students, and employing over 2,500 talented staff.  We also have three further academies in development phase, due to open in September 2020.  The Trust is establishing four ‘clusters’ of academies: North West Kent; Central Kent; South East London; Medway. In addition, the Trust is responsible for one of the region’s biggest initial teaching training providers and a large teaching school.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust, you will have ample opportunity to collaborate with your peers both within the academy and across the whole Trust.  This is an important part of our vision as we know through experience that we perform better when we work together.  You are supported to undertake regular self-development to continue your professional development and hopefully progress further within the organisation.

We strive to offer a range of benefits that all employees can take advantage of which we regularly review and add to - click here to view what you’d receive as a member of staff with Leigh Academies Trust.

Diversity at our core:  As a Trust we are passionate about diversity and recognise that as individuals we all bring something unique to the role regardless of age, gender, race, beliefs or disabilities which is why we treat all of our people equally, without compromise.

The academy is committed to safeguarding children and successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.  Our commitment to safeguarding is underpinned by robust processes and checks which are in place across the Trust.

Our STEM provision develops critical thinking skills, creativity and innovation across the curriculum and we are in a privileged position to be registered to deliver the T Level programme at Key Stage 5 from 2023 in a brand new Engineering and Design Centre. As part of our Digital Strategy, each student has their own Chromebook which is used as a tool for learning and to prepare them to participate in the ever-evolving technological world.

We are a diverse community where everyone is valued, respected and trusted and where we all work together to achieve and celebrate success. Our students are at the centre of the academy community and thrive within a culture of high aspiration, with no cap on ambition, so that they gain the knowledge, qualification and skills to afford successful, fulfilling and happy adult lives.

Staff are reflective and committed practitioners who believe in collaboration and self-improvement. We have weekly ring-fenced time on Wednesday afternoons for our comprehensive CPD programme, tailored to the aspirations and interests of the individual, and have extensive expertise both within the Academy and across the Trust to support in its delivery.

The wellbeing of our students and staff lies at the heart of our work: we know that when our school community is happy and fulfilled, they achieve their best.
