Director of MFL and EAL

Tes Schools RecruitmentHounslow

Director of MFL and EAL.

Tes is currently supporting a friendly and supportive academy, based in Hounslow. The school is looking to add a Director of MFL and EAL to their progressive and supportive MFL Department ideally starting in September 2021.

The role will include directing the delivery of MFL and EAL at KS3, GCSE and A-level across year groups 7 to 13. You will lead your department to enhance provision and will get the chance to lead on exciting project work throughout the year. Project work may include revising schemes of work and ensuring the curriculum is engaging to all learners alongside projects that support student attainment, well-being and engagement within the wider school. However, as Director you will have full autonomy to ensure your department meets targets and exceeds needs of our learners. You will lead by example, supporting and empowering your department’s teachers, staff and pupils to achieve to the best of their ability.

The Director will also line manage the MFL and EAL department, supporting the SLT link and Headteacher to ensure the department achieves to its maximum potential.

“An exciting position for Director of Faculty for Modern Foreign Languages & EAL has now opened up at the academy. Modern Foreign Languages provision at the academy is in need of substantial change, following a prolonged period of very low outcomes and a lack of rigour in our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum. Staffing wise, there are two other Modern Foreign Languages teachers who will work alongside our Director of Faculty. The academy offers French and Spanish at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, and our hope is that once the standards and outcomes improve within Modern Foreign Languages we will be in a position to then look at offering Languages at A Level. At Key Stage 3, students study languages for 2 lessons per week, with ‘Grammar School Stream’ students studying both French and Spanish as dual linguists for 4 lessons per week. At Key Stage 4, students study Languages for 3 lessons per week. Over 60% of our students choose either French or Spanish as one of their GCSE options, with approximately 3-4 groups in a typical GCSE year group.

The schools is unique place, as over 78% of our students are EAL learners, with the significant majority of these students not undertaking their primary education in the UK. This means that the school is an EAL specialist school. EAL provision at the academy has traditionally been strong. Our Subject Leader for EAL is hard working and very committed to driving forward a thriving EAL provision at the school. She is accompanied by another member of the EAL teaching team, who also co-ordinates the academy’s Home Language provision . The successful candidate for Director of Faculty will provide strategic direction for the development of Modern Foreign Languages and EAL at the academy, will lead Languages provision at the academy and will line manage the Subject Leader for EAL, playing a vital role in developing and promoting EAL strategies across our school. They will also play a key role in our admissions process, working closely with the admissions team to ensure that EAL learners are screened and appropriate support is put in place for them.

This role allows someone to demonstrate considerable impact at both subject level and whole school level and would be an ideal stepping stone position for an experienced and successful Head of Department, Lead Practitioner or 2i/c of Department who aspires to secure a senior leadership role in the future.”

The school is offering:

• A super supportive and highly visible SLT team and Headteacher;

• on-going CPD with programmes of study such as NPQSL and MA in Educational Leadership

• progression support throughout the school and wider group

• support package for NQT’s/RQT’s including CPD and NQT mentorship;

• the chance to take on further responsibility such as Leadership roles in the future.

The school expects:

• A UK teaching qualification such as PGCE/PGDE, SCITT, BEd or MEd with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

• a relevant MFL and EAL Degree or a related subject

• experience of delivering MFL and EAL up to A-level pushing and engaging learners to progress within the subject

• experience managing a department: specifically people and financial management

• a love and passion for education.
