Chetham’s School of Music is the UK’s largest specialist music school, offering an unparalleled music and academic education to around 300 of the finest young musicians from the UK and around the world. Students aged 8-18 join the School on the basis of the musical potential and commitment which they display at audition. There are no academic entry requirements, and means-tested funding up to full fees is available through the DfE’s Music and Dance Scheme. In 2019, Chetham’s celebrates its 50th anniversary as a specialist music school.

Chetham’s seeks an accomplished, innovative and creative musician to lead the School’s music programme from September 2019.

The Director of Music will enable every student to reach the highest standards, and will consistently promote excellence, ambition and creative zeal amongst colleagues in a thriving department and across the School. The Director of Music is a member of the Senior Leadership Group and works closely with the Principal and Governing Body in affirming the strategic direction of the School.

The Director of Music will be a relationship orientated, values based, practical musician and leader who exudes warmth, approachability and a love of sharing her/his extensive musical knowledge. The Director of Music’s exceptional communication skills will ensure the School continues to nurture relationships, develop new partnerships, and build on its reputation at the forefront of the UK’s music education sector.

Chetham’s School of Music is an independent, mainstream school with a sixth form, for children between the ages of eight and 18. The co-educational establishment, based in Long Millgate, Manchester. There is also boarding provision, with approximately 2/3 students staying at the school at present.

The school is part of the Foundation of Chetham’s Hospital School and Library, founded by Humphrey Chetham in 1653. The first students attended the school in 1956. Chetham’s occupies buildings dating back to 1422, as well as new buildings such as the recital hall, which was constructed in 2012. No academic assessment is required to attend the school – entry is based solely on musical talent.

Values and vision

Chetham’s School of Music aims to deliver stimulating lessons that encourage pupils to develop good learning habits. Students get the chance to showcase their musical talents by performing in lunchtime concerts. Teachers and children value each other and celebrate everyone’s successes. Pupils are urged to attend the performances of their peers, giving feedback and showing their support.

“Levels of supervision at all times are good. Staff have appropriate levels of training to care for the age and needs of the pupils and the nature of the activity. The school has an appropriate and comprehensive written behaviour policy, which covers behaviour both during the school day and at other times. It includes the school rules, disciplinary sanctions, occasions when restraint may be used and also arrangements for searching pupils and their possessions. The policy is effectively implemented throughout the school.”
