Job overview

Hereward House School is a small, friendly, IAPS school where music plays an integral part in the life of the pupils. Nearly all pupils play a musical instrument, many from Year 1. The school runs an Orchestra of about 60 boys (almost half the senior school), a school choir and numerous ensemble bands. Pupils learn piano, strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion, from a team of 9 peripatetic teachers. This is supplemented by weekly music lessons up to Year 6 and each class has one informal concert a term. In recent years boys have gained Music Scholarships and Exhibitions to schools such as Eton and Westminster.

For September 2017, we require a well-qualified, enthusiastic and committed candidate to take up the position of Director of Music.

The main focus of the role will be to rehearse and lead our School Orchestra and School Choir. Both have weekly rehearsals in preparation for major Christmas and Summer Concerts, as well as the School’s ‘Grand Biennial’ concert. The Director of Music is expected to organise and accompany these performances, along with the weekly class concerts and ensemble concerts.

The Director of Music oversees the musical tuition within the department, liaising with peripatetic teachers to keep abreast of pupils’ musical progress in lessons and examinations. The Director of Music also teaches Music Theory as an academic subject to a few classes during the school year.

The right candidate will be able to direct large musical ensembles and concerts. They will also have the ability to plan a diverse and exciting annual music programme to positively enhance the general musical direction of the school.

The position can either be taken up full-time for the candidate who can teach another, ancillary subject or part-time by the candidate who wishes to remain entirely focused on the Director of Music role.

The rate of pay is extremely competitive and above national pay scales.

To apply please fill out the application form below and return either by email to Office@herewardhouse.co.uk, or in writing to Mr Evans, Hereward House School, 14 Strathray Gardens, London, NW3 4NY.

Hereward House School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

About Hereward House School

Hereward House, a preparatory school for boys aged 4-13, was founded in 1951 and is accredited by the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools.

We aim to provide a warm, welcoming and safe atmosphere in which every child can thrive and feel comfortable. Whilst embracing the highest academic aspirations for our boys, we believe that a school should not be an exam factory. We strive to create a stimulating, purposeful, safe, and happy community, where every child feels valued and secure. We aim to be a school where boys will be encouraged and assisted to develop academically, morally, emotionally, culturally and physically. It is our belief each one should enjoy his school days and reflect upon them with pride, pleasure and affection. We are preparing boys not just for senior school, but for life.

The school seeks to provide a lively, stimulating and intellectually demanding education in a friendly and well disciplined environment. Modern approaches are employed alongside those traditional methods that have proved their worth.

The Headmaster, Pascal Evans, leads a highly qualified and dedicated team. The curriculum is varied and interesting, and almost every boy learns an instrument. Games, especially team sports, are important.  Supported by Leonie Sampson, the Chair of Governors, who has been a head for over 30 years. She can be contacted via the school number throughout the year.

By providing a happy and challenging environment, the school aims to meet the needs of the individual child, enabling him to reach the highest standards of personal achievement in both academic and non-academic fields.

Hereward House provides the firm foundation boys need in order to achieve fine results at Common Entrance and scholarship and the skills to succeed in their Senior Schools and in life.
