A rare opportunity to lead the music making at a prestigious London prep-school.

To start either Summer term 2018, or September 2018.

St Paul’s Cathedral School is looking for a world-class Director of Music to lead the musical education of day pupils and choristers across the age range, Reception to Year 8.

Music making is central to St Paul’s Cathedral School’s ethos, where every child enjoys instrumental music, often to an exceptional standard. Building on what is arguably one of the most successful prep-school music departments in the country, with over 400 individual music lessons a week, offering every orchestral instrument and a full range of ensembles and orchestras, the Director of Music will bring their own vision to take the department to the next phase.

The successful candidate will continue to drive the school’s exemplary track record in ABRSM music examinations, and will be supported by a vibrant team of over 20 visiting music instructors. The Director of Music will also be an outstanding classroom teacher of general music, able to inspire a love for and understanding of music.

With overall responsibility for the school’s choirs, orchestras and ensembles, the Director of Music will be able to develop a rich calendar of events, including joint orchestral days with other schools, occasional sung services in the Cathedral, and solo performance opportunities for pupils and informal concert programmes.

Joining St Paul’s Cathedral School at its most exciting moment in recent history, the Director of Music will play a significant role in developing the school’s vision for music making and music outreach as part of a wider school development programme.

It would be an advantage for candidates to have some experience of a boarding school environment, and indeed there may be an opportunity to become involved in the boarding routines of choristers.

The Director of Music will report to the Headmaster and will also work closely with the Cathedral Music Department to seek and develop joint initiatives.

Set in the iconic grounds of St Paul’s Cathedral, affectionately known as our school chapel, the School has strong facilities in the department, including a large teaching room and 14 individual practice rooms.

The successful candidate will be joining a fabulous academic team which embraces new ideas, collaboration, hard work and creativity. You will be very well organised, enthusiastic about teaching and learning, keen to continue to develop your own pedagogy and have the drive to develop and lead the strategic direction of the School’s Music Department.

The right candidate will be a music graduate, and an exceptional musician in their own right. They will have either led a music department in a Primary/Prep setting, or be looking for their first leadership role.

Working in a friendly, warm environment, you will be involved in the whole life of St Paul’s Cathedral School.

Our parents are genuinely supportive and the salary is highly competitive.

If you think this could be for you, then please complete the application form. You are also very welcome to come and visit us, or to have an informal chat with the Headmaster, Simon Larter-Evans.

Call us on 020 7248 5156, or email Clare Morgan at headspa@spcs.london.sch.uk to arrange.

Closing date for the applications is Monday 5 February 2018. We will endeavour to hold some interviews before half-term. We reserve the right to make an appointment before the closing date.
