Job overview

NOR: 1020

We seek to appoint Director of Music to further develop our Music provision. With every Key Stage 3 student receiving group tuition on an orchestral instrument, and an unprecedented number of boys taking part in our existing extra-curricular programme, we are looking for a professional who can capture and further develop the talent and creativity of our students.

Rated outstanding by Ofsted in February 2015, Central Foundation is one of the top performing schools in the country based on GCSE outcomes. In 2019, 82% of our Year 11 students achieved a good pass (Grade C/4 or above) in both English and Maths while 36% of Year 11 students achieved a grade 7, 8 or 9. Music is offered at KS4 and KS5.

Music is very popular at the school, both within curriculum and extra-curricular provision. Our Music School, which runs from 8.00am – 8.55am throughout the week, engages over 150 students in a variety of music activities including choirs, several guitar groups, wind ensembles, concert band, strings and keyboards and an orchestra. Individual and small group instrumental lessons are delivered by tutors throughout the day in addition to the morning Music School group activities.

In addition, the School is working in partnership with MiSST (The Music in Secondary Schools Trust), a charity which helps secondary schools engage students with music by providing not only funding for classical instruments, but also support in the form of regular tuition, opportunities to perform and a programme of excellence that is unrivalled in the UK. Through the MiSST curriculum, every boy is given a violin, viola, or flute at the start of their time at Central Foundation, on which they receive group tuition in their music lessons for the duration of Key Stage 3.

Our music provision has made Central Foundation a school of choice for many students interested in developing their musical talents.

The Director of Music would be required to personally oversee the day to day running of the Music School provision, MiSST programme provision as well as the team of professionals within the department. The Music team consists of Assistant Director of Music, 7 specialist tutors including brass, woodwind, strings, drums, guitar, piano and singing tutors as well as MiSST tutors delivering small group tuition in Key Stage 3 lessons. The department is also supported by a part-time Music Administrator who organises the music lessons timetable and manages the stock of musical instruments.

The successful candidate will be expected to actively develop the MiSST provision, and lead and collaborate with the team on curriculum interventions, school concerts and other directed musical and marketing events. As well as these the successful candidate will be expected to source other performance opportunities for our students.

The department has 2 teaching rooms, a Mac suite, and practice rooms. We are well stocked in terms of a wide range of musical instruments.

We are undergoing a major redevelopment of the School site which will include an exciting new Performing Arts centre with a Music hub.

The behaviour of students is outstanding and the disciplined environment allows the teachers to focus on delivering great academic outcomes.
We are very ambitious in our aim to provide the best possible opportunities for our students. We set high standards for all professionals working at the school but we also provide a very strong net of support for both new and existing colleagues.

Central Foundation is:

  • an outstanding school (Ofsted, February 2015)
  • a school that is situated in a vibrant multi-cultural environment next to the ‘silicon roundabout’ on the edge of the City of London
  • a school with excellent transport links

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced criminal record check.
