Job overview

Hampton Court House is a fast-growing co-educational independent school situated in beautiful riverside parkland between Richmond and Hampton in southwest London. The school is all-through from Pre-Nursery to Year 13.

We are looking to employ an inspirational musician to fill the the role of Director of Music (Senior) from September 2019. The role would suit those that are classically trained but have interests in a broad range of musical styles. The core of the job is teaching Year 5 to Year 10 students classroom music, and the successful candidate would be encouraged to adapt the syllabus creatively to reflect their own musical expertise and interests.

We seek an organised but passionate musician who has a genuine interest in child development to work closely with the school’s Director of Music (Junior). The role will involve co-ordinating the team of 10 peripatetic teachers, processing applications for individual music lessons and creating a timetable spreadsheet of private music lessons at the start of each term, with assistance from the Music Administrator.

The Director of Music (Senior) will also share the responsibility of organising end of term concerts, which are key events in the school calendar, and will be encouraged to collaborate with other departments on assemblies and special cultural events where possible.

The role involves liaising with parents and colleagues on a regular basis, so excellent communication skills are a must.

If you would like to discuss the role informally, please contact the Director of Music (Senior) by email at kmb@hchnet.co.uk.

Salary – negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications.

Deadline for applications: Friday 24 May.

Hampton Court House is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Nestled in Bushy Park, Richmond-upon-Thames, Hampton Court House is an independent co-educational day school for ages 2 – 18, educating Early Years children in our Pre-Prep School & Nursery, The Little Courtiers, to students in Year 13.

The majority of our pupils elect to stay on to complete their full education with us, enjoying great success in their GCSEs and A Levels: in 2023, 40% of A Level grades were awarded A*/A, resulting in a 100% Oxbridge and Russell Group application success rate. Our GCSE results were equally strong, with 70% of all GCSE grades being awarded A*/A. Hampton Court House was in 2022 ranked in the top 50 independent schools nationwide (The Telegraph) and in the top 10 co-educational independent schools in London (School Owl, 2023).

Our programmes offer an extraordinary education. From the Forest School in Early Years and the award-winning Institut francais LabelFrancÉducation accredited French bilingual programme, to the Nebula Future Researcher’s Programme © in the Sixth Form, Hampton Court House pupils get a head start every step of the way.

We lay the foundations of a lifelong love of learning, and it is important to us that children enjoy being here and look forward to coming to school. In keeping with our ethos, we believe that children need some guided freedom in order to develop their independence and confidence to use their voice. Our non-uniform parkland campus environment, in which staff and pupils alike are addressed on a first-name basis, cultivates an energy where pupils grow in confidence and find themselves.

The school is located close to Hampton Court station, which is 35 minutes from Waterloo and 20 minutes from Wimbledon by train. There are also frequent buses to and from Kingston, Hampton, Teddington and Twickenham, or for staff who drive, there is on-site parking.
