For delivery of the PE curriculum at KS3, KS4 & KS5;

For delivery and expansion of training opportunities, sports participation and all internal and external sporting fixtures across the School’s three main sports – rugby, football, cricket – plus a broad range of other sports which currently include basketball, tennis and badminton, indoor rowing, tennis and trampolining;

For acting as Cadet liaison officer for our in-school CCF detachment.

For delivery of the sporting aspects of the School’s strong and long-standing House System

To be responsible for a whole school initiative which directly links to the school’s vision.

Rutlish is an aspirational, oversubscribed boys’ comprehensive school, located in the conservation area of Merton Park, Wimbledon.   Ofsted awarded Rutlish School “Outstanding” status in 2017 and two years later we were ranked as the top non-selective state-funded boys’ school in England, based on the progress students made between KS2 and KS4.  Our Sixth Form students were also ranked in the top twenty for non-selective State-funded boys’ schools in England.

It is our ambition to be among the most successful sporting State schools in England. The Director of PE, Sport and Physical Wellbeing is an exciting new role, created to achieve this goal.

Applicants will be expected to lead from the front, inspiring departmental staff to support our students at every level of sporting ability, strengthening our curricular PE offering, expanding sport and enrichment activities and extending our calendar of extra-curricular sports fixtures.

If you are committed to achieving the highest standards in sport and physical wellbeing for our students, and feel you have the skills and mindset to lead Rutlish School in the next stage of our dynamic sporting ambitions with the full support of the Senior Management of the School and the Governing Body, then we look forward to receiving your application.

Facilities

We are proud of our extensive on-site facilities which include a large playing field, sports hall, gymnasium, recently refurbished pavilion with indoor fitness area and climbing wall, hard court area and outdoor basketball court. We are also fortunate to have access to a range of additional off-site facilities, the pitches of the Old Rutlishians’ Association which are around the corner from the School and also close by the playing fields of the original Rutlish School site which are owned by The Rutlish Foundation.

Staff

Our PE department currently includes seven experienced permanent teachers holding a variety of TLR roles across the School and a PE technician. The new Director role will line-manage the Head of the PE department, the Duke of Edinburgh coordinator, the Combined Cadet Force liaison officer and will be expected to develop and engage additional support from external qualified coaching staff. We welcome applications from those who are ready to lead this faculty from the front while working hands-on as part of a highly effective team.

Curriculum

Our KS3 curriculum follows the national curriculum and supports our three major games of rugby, football and cricket. In Year 7 the students are taught gymnastics which leads into trampolining from Year 8 onwards. Athletics, net games, striking and fielding games plus orienteering make up the remaining KS3 activities. At KS4 students all take part in PE and can enhance their studies through GCSE PE or Level 2 BTEC Sport. We have a co-educational sixth form (RR6) where Level 3 BTEC Sport is offered in partnership with Ricards Lodge High School. We expect the successful candidate to demonstrate a year-on-year improvement in sports participation, increase the range and depth of sports and sports teams on offer, and deliver improvements in GCSE/BTEC PE results.

Enrichment

We see sporting opportunities as a vital and integral part of our enrichment offer across all Years 7-13. Current activities include rugby, football, table tennis, badminton, indoor rowing, tennis, cricket, trampolining, basketball and athletics. The School has ambitions to be highly successful in all its sporting fixtures.  The successful candidate will be expected to drive the planning and management of a significant expansion of the sporting offer to students. This will include, but not be limited to, the main team sports. We wish our students to regularly participate in competitive fixtures across Rugby (National Schools Cup), Football (Surrey County Leagues) and Cricket (schools competitions). We also want to drive participation and competition in other sports such as, but not be limited to, Basketball, Rowing and Tennis.

We enjoy a long-standing relationship with the nearby Old Rutlishians Association (which has large and very successful junior rugby, cricket and football sections) and local tennis clubs. Our students also regularly act as ballboys at the annual AELTC (Wimbledon) tennis championships.

The School also works closely with The Rutlish Foundation charity which founded the School in 1895. The Foundation is fully committed to supporting the School with additional funding to achieve our sporting and academic ambitions.

Values and vision

Rutlish School aims to create an environment where boys and staff behave responsibly and contribute fully as they develop a clear sense of belonging to the school community. The secondary school is committed to educating the whole person and helping its pupils to understand the importance of responsibility, compassion, competition, fairness and honesty in all that they do.

Teaching students the skills of self-discipline, co-operation, respect and tolerance is seen as essential, as without these skills it is believed that academic objectives cannot be reached.

Ofsted report

“The boys are proud to be members of the school; they feel safe and their behaviour is considerate and courteous. Internal and external exclusions have fallen rapidly as a result of consistent policies and careful monitoring. The headteacher and senior leaders, including governors, have been successful in their relentless focus on improving teaching and raising achievement. Staff morale is high and parents and carers express confidence in the leadership and management of the school. The curriculum and students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development are strengths.”
