Bede’s is an independent, co-educational school located on two stunning sites, one by the sea in Eastbourne and one in the heart of the Sussex countryside in Upper Dicker.

We are looking for a professional and experienced Director of Safeguarding to manage two distinct but complementary aspects of safeguarding within the Trust:

 Designated Safeguarding Lead for Bede’s Senior School (0.8) and;

 Director of Safeguarding for the Trust (0.2).

This dual role will:

• provide strategic direction for safeguarding across the Trust and ensure our approach, policies, procedures and organisational culture enable us to provide a safe environment for children and adults who come into contact with us;

• review the Trust’s current approaches to safeguarding in order to develop an appropriate, effective, efficient and proportionate overarching Safeguarding Strategy;  this will build on our highly professional and respected approach to child protection and associated procedures and practice;

• implement agreed changes to ensure our overall safeguarding approach, policies and procedures are embedded across the organisation and appropriately supported from the centre;

• lead and manage the current Safeguarding team, ensuring the mitigation of risk and protection of individuals, groups, organisational reputation and corporate standing.

We are seeking someone with the experience and ability to take the ultimate lead responsibility for child protection and safeguarding at Bede’s Senior School.  You will have knowledge of the requirements for keeping children safe in education, leading on child protection issues and in depth knowledge of relevant legislation, policy and good practice in respect of children and vulnerable adults.  You will also have excellent presentation and report writing skills, and the ability to communicate effectively to a range of audiences.

Bede’s Senior School, located in Hailsham, East Sussex is an independent, co-educational, secondary school for children aged between 13 and 19. It was founded in 1979 by Peter Pyemont. The building covers 140 acres of the Sussex Downs. It is both a day and boarding school. There are approximately 125 girls and 173 boys at the school at present. It was established in 1895 in Eastbourne as a preparatory school for boys. It then became a senior boarding school in 1978 and later in 1979 it moved to its current premises. There are five boarding houses for the children. These houses were surveyed in 2013 and valued for their Outstanding Design and Innovation.

Values and Vision

The school believes every pupil should be given equal opportunities to reach their goals. The children are the main focus. They have over 40 subjects to choose from at GCSE level and even more choices during sixth form. Each child should develop personally, as well as academically. They are encouraged to be creative and take part in school clubs. People in the community are valued, and students are prompted to teach residents IT, English, music and art skills.

“Health and safety procedures ensure that the premises, accommodation and facilities are maintained to appropriate standards. A range of formal and informal opportunities is provided for boarders to express their views. Effective use is made of electronic means of communication to enable boarders to contact their families. Records pertaining to boarders’ personal and academic development are carefully maintained. An appropriate police and regular checking procedures ensure that the whereabouts of every boarder is known. The school has a suitable complaints policy and records show that it is rarely used but effectively implemented where necessary.”
