Job overview

DIRECTOR OF SCIENCE

We are seeking to appoint an excellent, committed, enthusiastic and inspirational teacher as Director of Science for September 2023. They will provide professional and dynamic leadership to ensure the highest standards of learning and achievement for pupils, and to support the continuous development of staff. To this end, they will possess a clear vision for values and objectives of science education in the 21st century; they will demonstrate clear support for the School’s values (and an ability to articulate their connections with the work of the Science department); and they will possess excellent organisational, administrative and management skills.

We have no preference for specialism. The thriving Science Department comprises twenty-one experienced and specialist colleagues who teach across the age ranges, seeking to instil an enthusiasm and curiosity for science in all pupils. CLS Y6 and Y7 (Old Grammar and First Form) study Science but from Second Form (Y8) all pupils study the three separate sciences leading to the Edexcel IGCSE ‘Triple Award’. Science subjects are extremely popular in the Sixth From and pupils regularly go onto to high tariff universities to study STEM related subjects, Medicine, Natural Sciences and other closely related disciplines.

The School has a long-standing record of high academic achievement (96.6% of A-level and Pre-U entries gained A* to B/D1-M1 grades in 2022). There is also much happening in terms of co-curricular activities, and all staff are expected to be fully involved in School life.

We aspire to attract a staff that matches the social and cultural diversity of the CLS community. We welcome applications from anyone with the relevant skills and abilities, and particularly from those who may not previously have thought of applying to a school such as ours. We use CV Minder to anonymise applications.

CLS was named by the Sunday Times as London Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020, and occupies fine, modern buildings near St. Paul’s Cathedral overlooking the Thames, opposite the Tate Modern. There are impressive off-site sports facilities in south-east London.

CLS Teaching Pay Scale 2022/23 - (£35,490 to £58,210 - plus two progression points to £60,110 – 62,060).  There is a responsibility allowance/timetable allocation.

City of London School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Further information about the School and a copy of the most recent ISI Inspection report are available on the school website.

Values and vision

City of London School’s main aims are to encourage every pupil to be the best version of themselves. The Schools prepares pupils to be respectful, optimistic and inquisitive and ultimately kind in their outlook, aware of their wider community and ready for life after school in the 21st century.

The school aims for all pupils to fulfil their potential and leave with a love of learning. Staff are highly qualified specialists in their subjects and their own academic aspirations encourage pupils to develop their creative, intellectual and physical skills.

They teach pupils the value of constructive questioning and analysis and give them the tools with which to interrogate the world and to form their own ideas and opinions, as well as appreciating and respecting those of others.
