Job overview

Director of Sixth Form

Leadership scale (England & Wales) commensurate with experience (competitive)

September 2022

At The Malling School Sixth Form, we pride ourselves on our holistic approach, developing the whole student, through their academic lessons, the International Baccalaureate (IB) core curriculum and a rich extra-curricular offer. Students have access to and benefit from academic and pastoral support, an integrated enrichment programme and a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Being part of our school is more than studying for qualifications; there are significant contributions students can make as a sixth former in a whole variety of ways. Since 2015 we have delivered the IB Career-related Programme, which has produced great outcomes for our students (who continuously get higher than the global average in the majority of subjects we offer at KS5). We constantly review what we offer and seek ways of improving still further the opportunities for post-16 students. By working closely and creatively together we are able to continue to expand our offer of a wide range of courses and are delighted that our school is now the first school in the UK to take the step of adding the IB Diploma Programme to the Career-related Programme, so offering students the widest range of curriculum options and onward pathways.

We are seeking to recruit an exceptional candidate to join us as Director of Sixth Form.

The successful applicant will be highly motivated and able to confidently establish and develop excellent relationships with all stakeholders. You will be joining a supportive, committed, and passionate team who work hard to support the academic and pastoral development of its students.

We are looking for an experienced professional who can demonstrate strategic vision and operational skill, with a proven track record of success in raising standards.

Working as part of our extended leadership team, the successful applicant will have significant autonomy in leading the Sixth Form. They will take on key strategic leadership responsibilities across the whole school, further developing our IB Programmes of Study as well as ensuring all our students meet their potential regardless of starting points.

This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring leader who wants to develop their career in an exciting and progressive role. We are focused on school improvement and continuous learning for both our students and our staff.

We would like to hear from you if you are:

  • An energetic, driven, and enthusiastic individual, committed to whole school improvement
  • A good communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Collaborative, with the ability to develop strong professional relationships
  • Able to motivate and inspire students and staff to achieve their full potential
  • Committed to the happiness and wellbeing of our students
  • Passionate about further developing our IB programmes of study and wider curriculum offer

Please apply via the TES website. We would strongly recommend a visit to our school prior to application. Please email hr@themallingschool.kent.sch.uk to arrange an informal visit.

Closing date for applications: Friday 4th March 2022

The Malling School is committed to safeguarding and promotion of welfare of all children and young people. All successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS disclosure, Occupational Health check, two satisfactory references and where applicable, a prohibition from teaching check.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order (1975, 2013, 2020)

The Malling School

A mixed 11-19 co-educational High School of 1000 pupils serving the historic market town of West Malling and surrounding villages. The school is set in pleasant rural surroundings and has its own lake and extensive grounds. It was completely re-built in September 2007 and therefore has outstanding facilities.

West Malling is close to the county town of Maidstone and has excellent rail links to London and Ashford International (for the Continent).

This is an exciting time to be joining the staff of The Malling School.

Our school is increasingly becoming the first choice school for parents. As a result we are currently oversubscribed. We have robust behavioural systems and Developmental Learning Walks, rather than formal observations. All of which allow a teacher to flourish and do what they do best – teach!

We provide a very supportive environment in which staff can further develop their skills and we ensure every new member of staff has access to a trained coach. With close teams of teachers and non-teachers working together we take a collaborative approach to school improvement and have a shared aim of providing the very best education for our pupils.
