Director of Sixth Form, Higher Education and Professional Guidance

St Mary’s Calne offers an academically enriching working environment within the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, with easy transport links to Bristol, Bath and London

St Mary’s Calne is a member of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) and the Headmasters’ and Headmistress’ Conference (HMC); it is a leader in the field of girls’ independent boarding education.   With around 365 girls aged 11-18, including 120+ girls in the Sixth Form, as well as innovative teaching, learning and scholarship, St Mary’s Calne offers outstanding pastoral care and a vibrant, warm community.

Ethos

St Mary’s Calne believes in excellence in all respects.  As a school community, we thrive amidst a culture of strong expectations and the education which we provide nurtures and develops the concept of high performance.  The principal aim is to develop well-rounded pupils who are equipped to excel as adults.

Extra-curricular opportunities beyond the classroom are a vital and integral part of life for girls at St Mary’s Calne.  These opportunities are woven into the timetable during the day, in the evenings and at weekends. We believe that both boarders and day girls benefit from all aspects of the strong boarding ethos of the school.

Opportunity

St Mary’s Calne is looking for a talented and enthusiastic teacher, with outstanding inter-personal skills, to join our Wider Senior Leadership Team in the role of Director of Sixth Form, Higher Education and Professional Guidance.

The main aim of the Director of Sixth Form will be to create a coherent and compelling academic, pastoral and extra-curricular Sixth Form offering.  Working with the two Sixth Form Housemistresses, you will ensure continuous and consistent focus on the development and achievements (pastoral, extra-curricular and academic) of the girls in the Sixth Form.

Working with the Boarding House teams, you will grow the identity of the Sixth Form and ensure its high-quality programme is widely acknowledged to secure pupil retention and to develop a flourishing additional entry point to the School.  You will attend Open Days and events and make a leading contribution to the Sixth Form offering and the Sixth Form Prospectus as well as managing nominations for the Head Girls’ Team.

In addition to overseeing the Sixth Form, the Director of Sixth Form will also have responsibility for Higher Education and Professional Guidance, ensuring that girls are open-minded and enthusiastic about their chosen path with high, but achievable, aspirations.  You will remain up to date with current developments, liaising with universities and alumnae to develop sources of information and a network of contacts.  You will liaise with Heads of Department to ensure their knowledge is current so that best advice can be given at all stages of a girl’s school career and will organise key events during the year including the Professional Guidance and Higher Education Convention, Professional Guidance Evening and Oxbridge and US University Information Evening amongst others.

With the support of the Lectures and Futures Co-ordinator, you will be responsible for Higher Education applications, tracking and processing these ensuring they are submitted accurately and within required timescales, recording the outcomes of all student applications.

As a member of the WSLT you will act as a professional role model to others, participate in whole school strategy discussions and decisions and play an active part in promoting the School.

About St Mary's Calne

St Mary’s Calne is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, a happy, purposeful and flourishing community of around 360 pupils with a 80% to 20% boarding to day ratio.

Founded in 1873, the school has been providing an outstanding education for girls for 150 years, and our alumnae have prominent positions in every profession from the law, politics and medicine to the arts, drama and sport. There is a strong tradition of the core academic subjects and strength in science and mathematics, as well as modern languages, arts and humanities.

Our Sixth Form is flourishing and highly successful, with over 120 girls. The girls benefit from exceptional careers advice and work hard to achieve their goals. Their academic results are outstanding and the girls go on to study at top UK and American universities; the striking range of courses they embark upon shows the wealth of choice available to our pupils. Many of the Sixth Form also undertake extensive pieces of independent research in the form of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), with 100% achieving A*s last year.

Located near the market town of Calne and amidst the natural beauty of the Wiltshire Downs, we are also within easy reach of the university towns of Bath, Bristol and Oxford and just over an hour by train from London. Our ideal location means that our girls benefit from a huge range of curriculum-enhancing opportunities as well as extra-curricular ones.

ISI May 2017:  Under the new ISI framework in both quality of Pupil Achievement and Pupil Development St Mary’s was awarded the highest possible grade – Excellent.  In addition, St Mary’s was found to be robustly compliant with all the ISI statutory standards in the Focused Compliance Inspection.

Our strategic plans for the next few years include the following:

  • To build on and develop a high expectation and success culture amongst pupils and staff.
  • To continue to develop and strengthen a fully integrated education for each girl which responds to her individual needs.
  • To develop a cutting edge curriculum and extra-curriculum that anticipates and responds to the needs of the workplace and life in the 21st century and allows girls to develop their agility of mind, their independence in learning and their adaptability.
  • To develop school structures, systems and facilities to support and enable our curriculum aims.
  • To ensure the high profile of St Mary’s is recognised in the local, national and international community.

St Mary’s offers positions on its own pay scale based on experience and expertise. Benefits include pension scheme, reduced school fees for dependents (including girls and boys up to 11 at St Margaret’s Preparatory School), a nominal fee for on site Sport Club membership (including access to a wide range of fitness classes, swimming pool and gym) and excellent term time meals.
