Job overview

This is an exciting and rare opportunity to lead a flourishing and ambitious sports department. Bishop’s Stortford College seeks to appoint an experienced and inspirational sports leader to take up the position of Director of Sport, Health and Fitness with effect from September 2025. The successful candidate will have a clear understanding of the landscape of contemporary school sport and will share the ambition to make the College regionally and nationally renowned in one or more co-educational sports. This is a full-time position.

The Director of Sport, Health and Fitness will be responsible for enhancing, and managing, a creative and exciting programme which allows all pupils to engage with physical activity at their own level, while developing a programme to nurture elite athletes in a variety of sports. For most, this will be in a variety of school sports, within the many teams that the school provides, at all ages and ability levels. This will enable aspiring athletes to benefit from outstanding coaching and competition opportunities, as well as wider support to enable them to become the best that they can be – on and off the pitch. It will be important to create an environment where pupils participate enthusiastically in school sport, while ensuring the most talented are able to access the right pathways to regional and national sporting representation.

High quality team games provision will be complemented by meaningful variety, to ensure that all pupils are able to find rewarding ways of being active. The successful candidate will promote healthy, active lifestyles and ensure that all pupils have regular, stimulating opportunities to embrace exercise. It is also important that the College’s Sports Scholars have a bespoke and compelling elite athletes development programme that is a hallmark of the College. Bishop’s Stortford College aspires to be an active community, which supports its athletes to be committed and ambitious, whilst also ensuring that all pupils engage positively with physical activity.

The appointed person will be expected to deliver a nationally recognised programme for cricket and/or hockey at Bishop’s Stortford, ensuring excellence in coaching, player development, and competitive performance. This will include forging partnerships with local, regional and national organisations to further enhance the College’s facilities and reputation for excellence. The Director of Sport will be responsible for implementing a strategic vision that aligns with national governing body standards, fostering a culture of high achievement and participation across all levels. This includes developing pathways for elite athletes, enhancing grassroots engagement, and forging strong links with regional and national organisations. Through innovative leadership and expert coaching, they will drive the sustained success of the programme while upholding the school’s values and sporting tradition.

The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A copy of the College’s Child Protection Policy is available on the website.

Bishop's Stortford College is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children; all employees are subject to a number of pre-employment and safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check. References and an online search will be undertaken prior to interview. To this end, robust Safeguarding processes and procedures are in place to support families, pupils, staff, and volunteers. In compliance with the sharing of information guidance/best practice, any concerns are passed to designated teachers, trained in Safeguarding.

At Bishop’s Stortford College, we have built a wonderful, busy, cheerful, confident and highly successful community. Within this environment your child’s personal journey of discovery will begin the moment they join us.

Our school offers the whole package: breadth of opportunity, depth of academic enquiry, and quality of human values and skills.

Qualifications and Qualities

Academic qualifications are a prime focus for us, yet we know that qualifications alone will not suffice for a life fully lived. Human qualities of decency and kindness are also a large part of the ticket to success. Together, qualifications and qualities are what an education for today and tomorrow must deliver.

We provide specialist subject teachers throughout our Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools and know that very good teachers at this very formative age have a very noticeable effect. We are selective based on academic ability, yet despite this, our value-added score is probably one of the best in the country. We are consistently in the top 7% nationally * meaning that our school makes the greatest difference.

Breadth and Balance

From whatever age your child joins us, life will be busy. They will be doing lots of different things, learning how to prioritise – to take charge of what they are doing and when. But even more importantly, your child will quickly find things they enjoy and become good at.

When they leave us, they will be well prepared for life beyond school, with a combination of abilities, some social, some academic and with choices – choices as to where to direct their efforts and enthusiasm. They will also have the confidence of knowing how to function in the new world that we are all going to embrace.

Community Spirit

We recognise the world your child will be entering and the skills they need. Learning to collaborate, to be a team player, to become friends with diverse, different people, will happen. Here there is a togetherness where none of us is as important as all of us.

The diversity of backgrounds, nationalities and ages of our pupils ensures horizons are expanded and everyone learns together and from each other.

We do not look like most schools of our type. We are different in some important ways. We are the modern face of independent education.
