Job overview

A unique opportunity to take the helm of one of the most vibrant and ambitious school sports departments in the country. If you are a strategic thinker, an inspirational leader, and a true champion for youth sport, we would love to hear from you.

Stamford School invites applications for a dynamic and visionary Director of Sport to lead our outstanding Sports and Physical Education Department. This is more than a job—it's a chance to make a lasting difference to the lives of young people through the power of sport.

At Stamford, we believe in the transformational potential of movement, teamwork, competition, and lifelong wellbeing. We’re seeking an influential leader who can bring to life a bold and inclusive vision for sport: one that energises our students from ages 3 to 18, celebrates participation and performance in equal measure, and builds a culture of excellence, joy, and resilience through physical activity.

Sport at Stamford is already a fundamental part of school life—with enviable facilities, an engaged student body, and a deeply committed team of staff. As Director of Sport, you will guide and grow a highly motivated team of 12 full-time specialist PE teachers, 7 full-time professional sports coaches, and a range of talented visiting coaches. Together, you’ll develop and deliver a rich, coordinated programme of physical education, games, performance sport, and health-focused initiatives across the whole Stamford School family.

You’ll have the opportunity to drive innovation, nurture talent, and ensure that every Stamfordian finds their passion for sport—whether on the pitch, in the pool, or discovering a new activity that will stay with them for life.

Essential Criteria

  • A good honours degree in a related subject and postgraduate certificate in education (QTS).
  • Experience of teaching or working with GCSE and Sixth Form aged students.
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of current issues relating to the personal development of young people.
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of how to promote equalities and ensure inclusive teaching and learning practices.
  • Ability to inspire, challenge, motivate and empower students as they prepare for life beyond school.
  • Proficient in the use of IT with a commitment to maximise the benefits of new technologies.
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and parents.

Stamford School is a large, co-educational day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 2 to 18. Established in 1532, it has a prestigious heritage, but everything we do is focused on preparing young people to lead happy and fulfilling lives in the 21st century.

Stamford is a family-friendly, inclusive, happy school with a deep sense of community and belonging. Our students are famously ‘rounded and grounded’, and we have a broad social mix that our parents greatly value.

We strive to provide a stimulating and challenging curriculum that inspires intellectual curiosity and encourages a love of learning. Stamford strives to offer an outstanding, contemporary education. Our students leave us with a flexible, adaptable mindset and an approach to learning that equips them to face the challenges and opportunities of their future.

We also believe that a student’s emotional well-being is paramount to their overall success. Our Pastoral care system is embedded in our daily school life, ensuring that every student feels valued, supported, and understood. We foster strong relationships between students, teachers, and parents, promoting open communication and a sense of belonging within our school community.

We are proud to offer a well-rounded education packed with opportunities beyond the classroom.
