Job overview

The British International School, Riyadh caters for students aged 3-18.  50% of students are British but over 50 nationalities are represented within the student body.  The school is accredited by the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) and the Council of International Schools (CIS).  The most recent British School overseas inspection described the BIS curriculum as “outstanding” and states that “students demonstrate outstanding attitudes, behaviour and personal development.  They take a pleasure in their own success and that of others”.  In a recent confidential survey staff overwhelmingly stated that they enjoy working at the school.  We now seek to add to our team.

The school offers a dynamic range of sporting opportunities for students and our students participate in local leagues as well as regional and international tournaments.

We are seeking to appoint a Director of Sports to work with the team of PE teachers and other sports coaches to ensure that students across the school who take part in sport: have a wide variety of sports in which they can participate; receive a high standard of coaching; have the opportunity to play fixtures within school and against other schools; develop socially and personally from participation in sport.  This is a vital role in enhancing the physical learning and the development of our 1500 students.

The successful candidate will have experience in a leadership role, probably as a Head of PE.  Previous experience in an international setting is highly desirable but not essential.  Above all, a strong commitment to the role and a genuine desire to work hard for the benefit of our students is essential.  It is a demanding job and requires long hours to do effectively.  However, the rewards are considerable.

The successful candidate will:

• be a  UK qualified teacher or have qualifications recognised  in the UK through the NARIC process;
• very competently fulfil all Teachers’ Standards as published by the Department of Education;
• put students at the heart of the education process;
• fully support the Mission and ethos of the school;
• commit enthusiastically to the school’s enrichment program including leading extra-curricular and inter-house activities;
• be able to use ICT as an effective teaching tool;
• believe in the values of international and inter-culturalism in an educational context;
• be responsible for the PE curriculum from Foundation 1 to year 13;
• Implement the strategic plan to ensure the continual development of the sports programme;
• liaise with colleagues from other schools to coordinate fixtures;
• oversee extra-curricular schedules to ensure maximum participation for students;
• ensure complete health and safety adherence for all sports trips;
• organise sports events and tournaments held at BISR;
• communicate timely and effectively with parents;
• source and work with external agencies that provide sports coaching;
• support the professional development of coaches and teachers;
• celebrate student success;
• have a high level coaching awards in at least two sports;
• be able to lead, motivate and inspire a team of dedicated PE teachers and external coaches;

Teaching at BISR

Ideally, we would like to appoint teachers with UK and/or international experience and an understanding of the place of British schools in the international context, but do not be prevented from applying if you do not necessarily have international or British curriculum experience.

We have a wonderful community here at BISR. Our students are highly motivated and a pleasure to interact with every day. Our staff are committed and know how to have fun. However, although the package is generally regarded as generous, we are not interested in people who only want to join us because of the money.

We want passionate educators, who wish to work extremely hard to make BISR the best British-style school in the region, and a genuine contender for the status of flagship British School worldwide. We expect all teachers to offer an extra-curricular activity and also to contribute to the House programme.

Our sponsorship packages cater for single status teachers without families, or married teachers with their spouse and children, or married teaching couples with their children.  The  package covers up to a maximum of 2 dependent children; however, families with more than 2 children may still apply but all costs (including schooling) for the 3rd child and onward will need to be borne by the staff member. Our sponsorship packages only apply to candidates who will not be under their spouses sponsorship.  The visa process to enable sponsorship can take a couple of months to progress, so it is advisable that candidates seek advice from the BISR HR Team on the timings for taking their children out of their current school.

The Curriculum at BISR

The academic programme is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum of England. In the senior section we offer IGCSEs, and A-levels. Although we are essentially an English national curriculum school, our international context allows us to adapt our curriculum to include examples of good practice gleaned from other successful and highly regarded curricula and we are particularly keen to appoint a person who is innovative in the delivery of the National Curriculum and appreciates the opportunities that our location provides.

BISR is well prepared to cater to the academic and social needs of internationally mobile students and encourages all students to constantly challenge themselves. Our teachers nurture students who are intellectually curious, creative, respectful, caring and discerning young adults, conscious of their responsibility to the community and their environment. Parents are encouraged to work in partnership with the school and support its drive towards excellence.

The school is set up as a not-for-profit entity and is a member of The British Schools of the Middle East (BSME) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and regularly undergoes an inspection process via PENTA to be recognised as a British School Overseas (BSO).
