The Director of Students works closely with the Head of Counselling, Head of Strategy, and Director of Curriculum to assist the Principal in matters relating to the day-to-day operations of the school but with a particular focus on matters relating to student welfare and management. The person holding this position reports to the Head of Senior School in the first instance. 

This role is responsible for working in conjunction with the Head of Strategy in developing and implementing best known contemporary practices in pastoral care, management of behavioural development and welfare to enhance the overall wellbeing of students.

The position is temporary full-time role with potential to become permanent. The role will also include a  0.20 teaching load in the relevant area of study of the successful applicant. The position  will commence in Term 4, 2019. 

The key responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to):

  • Liaising with the Head of Strategy and Director of Curriculum in ensuring there are appropriate and adequate welfare-related programs included within the curriculum;
  • Contributing to the review and embedding of all student duty of care policies; 
  • In conjunction with the Head of Strategy, organising and managing wellbeing and professional development for staff;
  • Leading, in conjunction with Head of Counselling, the Year Coordinator team meetings;
  • Ensuring clear and appropriate communication between the key student support personnel in the school, especially between the Year Coordinators, Tutors, the Head of Learning Enrichment, boarding staff, and those responsible for the co-ordination of other support roles – e.g. school nurse etc.;
  • Take an active role in the facilitation and application of the principles of Positive Education into the policies and practices related to student wellbeing;
  • In conjunction with the Head of Strategy oversee the development, application and review of all school wellbeing policies and practices and ensure they are consistent with the philosophies of the school regarding the management and development of student behaviour;
  • Working with the Head of Counselling to oversee the pastoral care provision in the school.
  • Administrative tasks attached to the delivery of the pastoral care program e.g. producing annual diary, assisting with Speech Day, enrolment and scholarship interviews etc.;
  • Establishing safe and supportive learning environments;
  • Managing student behaviour by engaging students in purposeful and worthwhile learning activities.

We are looking for a teacher/leader who:

  • possesses a strong understanding of contemporary research and best-known practice in the development and application of pastoral and welfare management practices that enhance the overall wellbeing of students;
  • has knowledge of and the ability to develop, apply and review policies and practices relating to the management of pastoral care, development of behaviour and welfare that are consistent with the philosophies of school regarding student wellbeing;
  • possesses proven capacity to develop trust with students, parents and staff and guide the development and wellbeing of students;
  • is has excellent interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills, including the ability to liaise and provide advice regarding student wellbeing to all levels of the school and to parents, guardians and wellbeing service providers;
  • possesses well-developed leadership, people management and supervisory skills; 
  • holds high-level organisational and administrative skills and an ability to manage and coordinate projects and services to staff and students;
  • has well-developed report writing skills;
  •  is ethical and able to live to the values;
  • has a commitment to ongoing professional learning;
  • is an exceptional classroom practitioner;
  • will actively support the ethos of this Anglican Independent School.
