About Australian Capital Territory Education Directorate

Welcome to the ACT Education Directorate.

The ACT Government believes every child deserves a great education and the life chances which flow from it. The Education Directorate develops and delivers educational services to empower each child and young person in the ACT to learn for life.

We deliver high-quality education across 88 public schools educating over 49,000 students from early childhood through to college. We also register non-government schools in the ACT.

Our Strategic Plan 2018-21: A Leading Learning Organisation explains what we do, what we want our organisation to become, what we want to achieve, how we will achieve it, and how we will hold ourselves to account. It has emerged from the ‘Future of Education’ discussion that has occurred across the ACT community.

Pay and Conditions

Our ACT Public Sector Education Directorate (Teaching Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2018-2022 (Teaching Staff EA) means teachers in the ACT will be the highest-paid and will have some of the best employment environments in the country.

Our Agreement will lead the sector in Australia. It includes:

  • Highest wages in Australia
  • Best superannuation benefits in the country
  • Increased professional recognition for teachers
  • Better support for teachers
  • Investment in school leaders
  • Safe and supportive workplaces

Support For New Educators

We are committed to enabling new educators to make the best start in their teaching careers. This includes reduced face-to-face hours of up to 1 hour 30 mins in the first year and 30 mins in years 2 and 3 to facilitate enhanced support and mentoring. From 2020, all new educators will also participate in a five-day induction program prior to commencing the school year.

Professional Learning

As a leading learning organisation, we are committed to continuing professional learning and development to build and support quality teaching. This is achieved through individual performance and development plans, aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and school-based Professional Learning Community Programs. This range of programs is aimed to build our teachers’ skills and capacity to support their students’ learning needs in the classroom, as well as their own teaching practice.

Why Canberra

Ranked as the world’s most liveable city, Canberra is a safe, friendly, convenient and multicultural environment in which to study, work, and live. Planned and purposely designed in 1913, Canberra is a city of unspoiled nature reserves, contemporary and dynamic urban spaces, and bustling precincts with seamless integration of developed and natural elements.

With a population of just over 400,000 people, you get the excitement and advantages of city living, without the traffic, pollution, and stress of the big metropolis.

Canberra’s new Light Rail Network is part of an integrated and connected public transport network for a low carbon future. Getting around is easy and quick. By car, everything is within a 30-minute drive. Here, we spend less time commuting and more time living.

Canberrans are also spoilt for choice when it comes to weekend activities. You could easily travel to Australia’s highest mountains and ski slopes, pristine beaches, vast rural landscapes, and premium big cities—all within a few hours’ drive.
