Job overview

DistanceLearningCentre.com is looking to recruit a Science tutor for its Access to Higher Education Diplomas, Level 2 Science and GCSE courses. We are particularly looking for tutors who can teach Chemistry and/or Physics, rather than Biology only. Applicants need to have experience of teaching on Access programmes and will also be required to teach some Level 2 Science.

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic and dedicated team of professionals in an expanding organisation; mainly working from home autonomously, but also communicating effectively with other team members and attending regular face-to-face meetings. The post is not suitable for short-term bridging work as work levels are consistent and tutors are employed as full-time permanent, professional and versatile teachers. There are also regular paid opportunities for writing course materials and assessments.

As a distance learning tutor you will need an excellent telephone manner, ringing your students every week and undertaking regular tutorials over Skype, be highly IT literate and respond to emails within 24 hours. You will need to be able to mark work accurately and promptly, within agreed deadlines, to a given set of criteria and write academic references. You will provide structured support and guidance, helping students meet their goals, with the ability go the extra mile through a commitment to see students gain confidence and fulfil their potential.

DistanceLearningCentre.com was established in 1993 as The Distance Learning Centre and is now the leading national provider of online Access courses with an excellent reputation for quality and a very high rate of success. In 2015, our students obtained places in over 70 different Universities across the UK.

DistanceLearningCentre.com Ltd is based in the UK and was established by a group of qualified teachers and lecturers in 1993, which makes it one of the longest established organisations of its kind. It is now the leading virtual college for Access to Higher Education in the UK. Our level of experience has led to us having a strong reputation for professionalism, reliability and quality, particularly with the Higher Education Institutions into which our students progress. We typically have over 700 learners progressing to over 100 different Universities each year.

Over the past few years, DistanceLearningCentre.com has expanded rapidly with over 2000 students studying at any given time. Although the organisation receives no government funding, it is still able to provide high‐quality courses at more competitive rates than most colleges. Our teaching staff are highly committed, working as a close‐knit supportive team, communicating regularly even though they all work from home. This approach is central to our ethos which is all about dedicated experienced educators enabling students to succeed in a friendly environment that contrasts significantly from traditional FE Colleges. Our staff turnover is very low, for the sector, as we employ and treat our staff as vocational professionals. We expect high standards from our staff but are very much opposed to the ‘blame culture’ which many teachers have experienced. Instead we operate a culture of support and openness in terms of tackling any problems which arise.

DistanceLearningCentre.com offers a range of distance learning courses (100% online) and specialises in Access to Higher Education Diplomas (accredited by Ascentis and QAA regulated) for learners wishing to enter Biomedical Science, Business, The Built Environment, Health Professions, Humanities, Law, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, Paramedicine, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Public Services, Social Science, Social Work, Sports Science, Teaching and other Health and Social Sciences. We also provide Level 2 qualifications in English, Maths and Science, Functional Skills and GCSEs.

We offer a uniquely individual, friendly and supportive service to all our students. This gives them every opportunity to succeed and fulfil their potential, studying flexibly at their own pace. Studying with us means students can work at home but still have a direct link to their own personal tutor through the Internet, by telephone or by post.

DistanceLearningCentre.com is particularly useful for people who for some reason cannot, or would rather not attend formal classes in a traditional college. We deliver with a personal touch producing high‐quality materials which only trainers with over 25 years of writing distance learning materials can achieve. We are very proud of our record of helping many people to realise their potential who may not have normally had such an opportunity due to: family or work commitments, social or cultural circumstances, geographical location, disability or simply a lack of confidence.

We are dedicated to operating with minimal environmental impact and recruit to provide equal opportunities irrespective of race, gender, age, sexuality or disability.
