Job overview

Drama and English Teacher

Hampton Court House is ranked number 1 on the Independent Schools Council’s table of ‘small independent schools’ and has been shortlisted for the TES Independent School Awards 2020 ‘senior school of the year’. Hampton Court House is a fast-growing co-educational independent school situated in beautiful riverside parkland between Richmond and Hampton in southwest London. The school has almost 300 pupils from Early Years through to Year 13.

We seek a skilled and knowledgeable drama teacher to start in September 2020 (who will be the de facto Head of Drama in the school) who also has the expertise to deliver first rate English lessons (either at primary or secondary level).

We are looking for an imaginative resourceful drama teacher who has graduated from a well-regarded drama school, and who can bring both rigour and challenge to the teaching of drama throughout the school. The right candidate will have the ‘presence’ to bring together school productions, whilst sensitively liaising with school staff and stakeholders generally.

Hampton Court House over the years has staged numerous full-length plays – by Euripides, Sophocles, Aristophanes, Shakespeare, Shaw, Agatha Christie, Beaumarchais, Miller, Ayckbourn, Dürrenmatt and many others, as well as plays by contemporary authors such as Dennis Kelly and Lucy Prebble.

The right candidate will have a good knowledge of playwrights and, as a teacher of English, will have a first-rate command of written English and will be exceptionally well read (this will be robustly assessed at interview).

The School does not currently offer GCSE or A level Drama but this is something which could in time be introduced. In addition to our own productions, our students have also taken part in productions with adults in nearby theatres (Hampton Hill Theatre, Mary Wallace Theatre etc) as well as in professional West End productions and in film.

If you would like to discuss the role informally, please contact the headmaster Guy Holloway (gh@hchnet.co.uk).

Salary – negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications.

Deadline for applications: Monday 24 February - 10 am.

Hampton Court House is 7 minutes walk from Hampton Court station (zone 6) and is on a direct line from Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham Junction and Wimbledon. There is parking at the school and all staff enjoy a free lunch.

A generous fee reduction is available on tuition fees for the children of all members of staff at Hampton Court House.

Hampton Court House is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Nestled in Bushy Park, Richmond-upon-Thames, Hampton Court House is an independent co-educational day school for ages 2 – 18, educating Early Years children in our Pre-Prep School & Nursery, The Little Courtiers, to students in Year 13.

The majority of our pupils elect to stay on to complete their full education with us, enjoying great success in their GCSEs and A Levels: in 2023, 40% of A Level grades were awarded A*/A, resulting in a 100% Oxbridge and Russell Group application success rate. Our GCSE results were equally strong, with 70% of all GCSE grades being awarded A*/A. Hampton Court House was in 2022 ranked in the top 50 independent schools nationwide (The Telegraph) and in the top 10 co-educational independent schools in London (School Owl, 2023).

Our programmes offer an extraordinary education. From the Forest School in Early Years and the award-winning Institut francais LabelFrancÉducation accredited French bilingual programme, to the Nebula Future Researcher’s Programme © in the Sixth Form, Hampton Court House pupils get a head start every step of the way.

We lay the foundations of a lifelong love of learning, and it is important to us that children enjoy being here and look forward to coming to school. In keeping with our ethos, we believe that children need some guided freedom in order to develop their independence and confidence to use their voice. Our non-uniform parkland campus environment, in which staff and pupils alike are addressed on a first-name basis, cultivates an energy where pupils grow in confidence and find themselves.

The school is located close to Hampton Court station, which is 35 minutes from Waterloo and 20 minutes from Wimbledon by train. There are also frequent buses to and from Kingston, Hampton, Teddington and Twickenham, or for staff who drive, there is on-site parking.
