Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a multi-skilled theatre technician, with a lighting and/or sound specialism, to play a key role providing first line technical support to the Drama department and users of the Fiennes Theatre, Drama Studio and Pavilion Room.

You will play an important part in delivering a high quality, safe and creative experience for our pupils across the Drama area of the school and will need a broad understanding and experience of providing technical support. This will include experience of managing resources, equipment, materials, tools, consumables and technology. You will be able to set up and manage technical resources for performance, supervise pupils supporting the technical side of performances, organise and maintain stock and equipment, and take responsibility for health and safety.

You will be joining a department which is housed in the Fiennes Theatre, a fully equipped, purpose-built performance space, holding 118 (retractable seating for versatile use of the space) with a smaller teaching studio attached. A new film/TV studio was opened in 2017 which the department has use of. Larger productions take place in the Hampden Hall (which seats up to 500).

Standard working hours are 10am-6pm (including a 30 minute meal break) across four days per week. The total working commitment is across 38 weeks of the year. You will be expected to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
