Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator / Support Staff

To commence: 1st September 2020

Salary: Grade dependant on Support Staff position within the school

39 weeks a year and 36 hours a week (hours negotiable)

Salesian School offers extensive provision for the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the scheme has flourished in recent years with hundreds of students completing their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards each year. We are fortunate to have a significant number of staff who are committed to organising the scheme and we already employ a member of support staff to oversee the administration. We are now looking to appoint a competent and suitably experienced leader to take overall responsibility for the scheme.

We would welcome applications from those looking to join the support staff, whether this be in the capacity of a Teaching Assistant, Administrative or Financial role. We would tailor the job specification for the successful candidate according to qualifications and experience but would be willing to be flexible for the right person.

The starting salary for a member of support staff would be set according to what other role and responsibilities they took on during school hours.

Salesian School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Enhanced CRB checks will be sought prior to appointment

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.

It is at the foundation of our values to:

  • Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
  • Ensure relationships are key
  • Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
  • Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values

We promise parents and students that we will:

  • Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
  • Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
  • Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world

We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.

We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.

We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.

Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.

We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.

We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
