Job overview

The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic, positive and highly competent Teacher of 3D Design. The person in this full-time role will contribute significantly to our vibrant department through their subject expertise.

As Teacher of 3D Design, you will provide stimulating and engaging lessons, delivering inspiring teaching that supports the learning of students. Working closely with your colleagues, you will also help create a positive culture of pupil welfare and behaviour, by taking an active role in pastoral matters as a form teacher.

You will be a well-qualified teacher, with experience of teaching 3D Design (the ability teach Art at KS3 would be beneficial). Drawing on your strong subject knowledge, you will be able to teach 3D Design up to A Level and will also demonstrate experience of successfully contributing to or running co-curricular clubs and activities.

The department itself is well resourced including equipment for metalwork, woodwork, plastics and a laser cutter with supporting CAD software and a 3D printer. The department also has 2 technicians.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and highly successful department that is dedicated to fostering creativity and artistic excellence.

The Department

The Visual Arts Department offers a broad curriculum, delivering Art, Craft and Design and 3D Design across all year groups up to A Level. Pupils have access to a diverse range of media, from traditional painting, printmaking, and contemporary techniques incorporating textiles, photography, and digital media.

3D Design is taught on a rotation in KS3 in order to enthuse pupils and introduce them to the subject. The 3D Design workshop and CAD (Computer Aided Design) suite features the most up-to-date workshop machinery, tools and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) equipment, including a laser cutter and CNC router. In KS3 pupils receive an introduction to Three-Dimensional Design, develop their graphic communication skills (including the use of CAD/CAM Computer Aided Design/Manufacture), electronic textiles (e-textiles), user-centred design, design communication skills, model making and working with metals.

At Key Stage 4, pupils follow the OCR GCSE specification for Three-Dimensional Design. In Year 10, pupils spend the first two terms developing their design, CAD/CAM and practical skills, building upon their Key Stage 3 experiences, looking at product designers and architects for inspiration. After Easter, pupils will start their NEA (Non-Exam Assessment Coursework) portfolio. Previous projects have included lighting, storage, architectural design, furniture design, jewellery and product design. Pupils can use a range of materials including polymers, timber (natural and man-made), metal, plaster, concrete and glass (stained-glass and glass-fusing).

Teachers within the department are supported in developing their own artistic practice and are expected to contribute to the school’s vibrant co-curricular programme.
