Job overview

English as an Additional Language

We are looking to employ an English as an Additional Language teacher in Secondary. In the past two years, this has been delivered by the MFL team – either German or French teachers.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of English as an Additional Language to small groups and individuals from Grade 6 (UK year 7) to Grade 12 (UK year 13).

Our curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum in Grades 6 – 8, Cambridge IGCSE in grades 9 and 10 and then the IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12. Normally there will only be one or two students in each grade. We offer English as a Second Language and English B at IGCSE and IB Diploma level respectively.

The teachers currently delivering the EAL curriculum are mostly French and German Teachers – so we would consider a language specialist for this post, as they could also teach some German or French.

The successful candidate would be located at our Euro Campus.

We are an equal opportunities employer and successful candidates must have a commitment to Safeguarding, Child protection and Diversity and Inclusion.

We will take up references to ensure the suitability of all candidates to work with young people.

The initial contract is for 2 years – with an opportunity to extend on mutual agreement

Successful candidates

Must have:

A valid teaching certification (can be waived for local hires with appropriate experience)

A minimum of two years teaching experience – ideally of one or more of the English National Curriculum, IGCSEs and IB Diploma

Experience of teaching 16+ students

Ideally have:

Experience working with mixed ability classes, supporting students with mild specific learning disabilities and English as an additional language.

A specialist certification in teaching English as a foreign/additional language.

Good to have:

A knowledge of India and or experience working in a similar country.

Start date 1st August 2022

Contact: full time.

We do consider teaching couples

For international candidates, education of their children in school is provided free of cost.

DSB International School is located on 2 campuses in Mumbai, India. We are a co-educational, not for profit, independent school.

Background

DSB International School caters for 195 students from 32 different countries. Students at the school range in age from 3-18 years.

The school opened in 1961 and is the oldest international school in Mumbai. For the first 40 years, it was a German school following the curriculum from Germany, taught in German. In 2001, a small international primary section was opened and this has since grown to include the secondary level, both of which run alongside the German section.

DSB International School is a small, friendly, vibrant, child-centred and family-oriented organisation, which offers a variety of extra-curricular activities. Parents are very supportive and many are very involved in school life.

The school is managed by a Committee of elected parents, and run by the School Principal and the Senior Management Team.

DSB International School Today

Students at the school come mainly from the consular and expatriate community in South Mumbai and consequently, student turnover is quite high, about 30% per year. About 40% of the students in the school are host nationals.

Classes are small, ranging from 5 to 16 students. This means that staff get to know the students very well. Consequently planning and teaching can be more manageably personalised and differentiated to meet the needs of individuals and small groups. Classes are mixed-ability and there is one class per year group.

The curriculum from 3-18 years, in the international section, is broadly based on the English National Curriculum, including IGCSEs accredited by Cambridge International Education Examination Board. The International Baccalaureate Diploma is offered from 16+ years. The German Section offers a German curriculum in close cooperation with the International Section. The teaching of the German language and German culture is an important feature of the school and is supported by the German Government. The international section now makes up over 95% of the school population.

In August 2014, the school introduced the IB Diploma Programme for the first time, for a small cohort of 5 students. Currently, we have IBDP cohorts of 10-15 students. The philosophy of the IBO fits very well with the aims, values and mission of the School Committee for the future of DSB International School.

In 2021, the school opened its new campus for 9-18 year-olds, with a state of the art Design & Technology room and 3D printing lab, a rooftop pool and sports area. In designing the new campus, we aimed to cater to a larger school population without losing the personal, individual touch that has been so successfully established over the last half century.
