Description

The Catholic Schools Office is seeking an experienced EALD Teacher for placement in a temporary part-time capacity at St Columban's Primary School, Mayfield. 


 Essential Criteria 

  • Employ a range of strategies to support student learning;
  • Excellent classroom behaviour management skills;
  • Empathy with and understanding of the needs of students speaking English as an additional language or dialect;
  • A sound knowledge of the skills and processes needed to support the literacy needs of EALD students;
  • Employ a range of strategies to support and motivate student learning;
  • Experience working with students with developing language needs;
  • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively as a team to support the literacy and English language skills of EALD students;
  • Sound knowledge of the Scales and the EALD Learning Progressions;
  • Experience in implementing early literacy strategies with EALD across all stages;
  • Experience in teaching English as a Second Language to newly arrived students in Australia;
  • Be appropriately qualified as a four year trained teacher;
  • Record current NESA and Working With Children number on application. Current references from recent employers to support the above criteria must be provided with the application. Note: To start or return to working as a teacher in a NSW school, you must be accredited by NESA.

About St Columban's Primary School

St Columban's Primary School is an independent, co-educational, mainstream Primary School in Mayfield, New South Wales. The school is a multicultural community with 22 different nationalities, including a number of African, Asian and Pacific Islander cultures. Situated close to Newcastle, the school is part of the Hunter Valley region.

The school has a well-resourced library which students attend twice a week for lessons. The school shares a campus with the local Catholic High School, San Clemente, which allows for smooth transition from Primary to Secondary school. The school has a Learning Support Teacher and two learning support assistants. A pastoral support worker assists families and children in need, along with an English as Second Language (ESL) teacher who supports some 65 children who have backgrounds other than English.

Curriculum

As well as teaching the Key Learning Areas of the NSW curriculum, students have the opportunity to participate in guitar lessons, choir, drama indoor and outdoor sports and creative arts.

St Columban's places emphasis on supporting the local community as part of the faith curriculum and attends community initiatives such as parish masses, Heart Foundation, Waterwatch and Law Week functions.
