Classroom Assistant for a Pre Reception or Reception class

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Full Job Description attached below)

The School day is from 8.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. (to be ready to start work/morning duty for 8.00am)

Under the guidance and direction of the Class Teacher and Deputy Head of Early Years:

  • To ensure pupil safety and welfare within the classroom. 
  • To ensure that pupils’ welfare and personal care needs are met. 
  • To be sensitive to the needs of a pupil who is unwell or has had an accident. 
  • To promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with incidents according to the School’s behaviour policy.
  • To support the Class Teacher in preparing teaching sessions, such as photocopying and work books.
  • To support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use.
  • To encourage pupil interaction and engagement with teacher led and child initiated activities. 
  • To support and supervise pupils in small groups or individually to achieve their learning objectives. 
  • To assist PE/Music teachers in lessons, showing enthusiasm and encouraging children to be motivated.
  • To provide regular feedback to the Class Teacher on pupil achievements, progress or problems.
  • To routinely maintain classroom materials and resources.
  • At the end of the day to tidy away all art activities, washing pots, brushes and wiping tables.  
  • To assist in the display and presentation of learning cues and pupils work inside and outside of the classroom environment as required.
  • As part of the Key Person approach, to assist with maintaining the pupil’s Leaning Journals, including observations and assessments. 
  • To be professional at all times when talking to parents and carers. 
  • To accompany teaching staff and pupils on school trips and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the Class Teacher.
  • To share in the pastoral duties on rota basis, e.g. early morning, break and lunchtime duties.
  • In the absence of the Class Teacher, to use the daily planning to take over the teaching of the pupils with support from the floating or supply assistant.    

The school is divided into three sections: Early Years is for children from Nursery to Reception, the Junior School is for children from Year 1 to Year 3 and the Upper School is for children from Year 4 to Year 8. All classes from Nursery to Year 2 (P2) have a Classroom Assistant. 

Classroom Assistants are generally allocated to one class, although they may be asked to supervise other classes if teachers are absent. There are also ‘floating’ assistants who support different classes depending on needs. Classroom assistants work under the direction of the Class Teacher, who has ultimate responsibility for the class, but a degree of initiative and self motivation is expected.
