Job overview

Dulwich College International (DCI) recognises that exceptional and inspirational teachers are our most valuable resource in providing our students with an excellent international education. DCI teachers are ambitious for their students’ learning and put students first in everything they do. They have the highest aspirations for their students’ achievement and development, both in the classroom and through the many extra-curricular activities on offer.

Our teachers actively promote the College’s Mission and Vision through their enthusiastic and full participation in College life and their supportive engagement with students, colleagues and parents.

A clear focus on learning is the foundation stone for DCI’s six core teacher standards which guide and inform our work with our young people across each age range and developmental phase. They are:

Knowing students and how they learn

Our teachers are expected to have detailed and insightful knowledge of the developmental characteristics and learning needs of the children they teach. They also need to have expertise in meeting the wide range of individual learning and pastoral needs of international school children who come from diverse cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds.

Plan for and implement effective learning and teaching

Our teachers are expected to have current knowledge and experience of the curriculum in the age range they teach. They set high expectations and challenging developmental and learning goals for their students and use a variety of effective learning and teaching strategies, resources and digital technology to support their students in achieving these goals. They encourage their students to be innovative, imaginative, creative and critical thinkers who are able to work well with others.

Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning and progress

Our teachers are knowledgeable and effective users of assessment to support learning. They use a range of data measures and assessment strategies to inform their evaluation of students’ progress which enables them to plan for learning and to report accurately and effectively on student progress and to design appropriate intervention and support strategies.

Develop supportive and safe learning environments

Our teachers are committed to safeguarding and to promoting the welfare of children and young people. They ensure a secure, stimulating and well managed learning environment that promotes a sense of safety, support and wellbeing.

Demonstrate International-mindedness and Global Citizenship

Our teachers have an appreciation of their own culture as well as openness to the perspectives and beliefs of people from different countries, cultures, religions and languages. They recognise the importance of developing students to be ethical global citizens.

Introduction

Dulwich College Yangon is one school spread over two campuses in Yangon, Myanmar. Our Pun Hlaing campus opened in August 2016 and the Star City campus commenced operation in August 2017. Like its eight sister schools in the Dulwich College International (DCI) family in Asia, Dulwich College Yangon (DCY) is a well-resourced, purpose-built school with 21st century learning spaces and world-class facilities.

Learning at Dulwich College Yangon

There is an emphasis at DCY on producing well-rounded individuals who are given a thirst for learning in order to make a positive difference in the world. – an aspiration encapsulated by the College vision of ‘Graduate Worldwise’. DCI schools cultivate excellence both in academics and in life, where every student is inspired to do their best.

Dulwich College Yangon is committed to an enquiry-based approach to learning, allowing for high levels of student agency both within and outside of the classroom. This child-centred approach to learning ensures that our teaching is inclusive and accessible for all, especially to our EAL and AEN students. Through the application of our Learning Principles, great emphasis is placed on discussing learning with the students and providing them with quality feedback to empower them to become independent, self-directed learners.

The co-curricular dimension of the College is exceptionally strong. Music, art and sport are thriving, with regular sports fixtures, school concerts and productions. All members of staff are eager to contribute to the co-curricular programme and students in the Junior and Senior Schools are encouraged to take two or more activities each week.

The College is already an accredited examination centre for Edexcel and has candidacy status with the IBO in its pursuit to gain authorization as an IB World School by August 2021.

Commitment to the Community

Dulwich College Yangon is also committed to using its position to actively engage with the local community and help contribute to the development of Myanmar.  Yangon was chosen as the venue for the inaugural project of the Dulwich International Schools Foundation (DISF), through its partnership with Magic Bus Myanmar, who now work with over 4,000 students in locations across Yangon. The Gap Kids programme is based in each of the campuses, with teachers and students working alongside young people from the local communities. Both projects are intended to break the cycle of poverty through participation in these livelihood projects.

Facilities

The Pun Hlaing campus is situated adjacent to the awarding winning Pun Hlaing Golf Estate and enjoys excellent facilities including a 350-seat black box theatre, music, art, design and technology rooms, science laboratories, covered sport courts, full-size sports field. A new Junior School building is now under construction and additional facilities will be added in the future, such as a gymnasium, aquatic centre with a 25 metre swimming pool and a range of other specialist facilities.

The Star City campus sits within the premier Star City residential complex and boasts similar high level, class-based facilities, along with an outstanding sports complex comprised of a 10-lane, 50 metre Olympic swimming pool, 20m training pool, double court gymnasium, club house, full-size outdoor football pitch, running track and dance studio. Further upgrades will feature a black box theatre and art and design centre, as well as room for two extra school buildings to support the expansion of the College through to Year 13. In 2019 the campus also launched its boarding provision, being the first international school to do so in Myanmar.

Professional Learning

As a recently established school, DCY offers wonderful career development opportunities for current and aspiring leaders, providing the chance to develop the College from its earliest days. Professional learning is an expectation for all staff, and our links with prestigious educational organisations, universities and academics worldwide, mean that Dulwich staff are able to participate in cutting edge research.

Educational Heritage

The College draws upon 400 years of experience in education. Our founder school, Dulwich College in London, provides expertise, resources and a rigorous set of academic standards to which we must adhere. In addition, close ties with our sister schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Singapore, Suzhou and Zhuhai provide us with further access to resources and enhanced professional development.

Career Development

As well as the excellent career prospects offered by Dulwich College Yangon, teachers will be well placed to subsequently move to our sister Colleges and Schools in China, Korea and Singapore, experiencing the chance to work in another country whilst remaining within the same network of schools.

Teachers are recruited from the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, North America and international schools throughout the world, regardless of nationality.  The remuneration package is generous with accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and other benefits, including a freight allowance, annual flight allowance, and free tuition at the school for up to two children.

The Location

Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, has a population of over 5 million and whilst no longer the capital of Myanmar it continues to be the largest city and commercial capital of the nation. It sits on the confluence of the Yangon and Bago rivers, 30kms from the Andaman Sea coast, and enjoys a tropical monsoon climate.

The city boasts a rich history and offers unique sites including the Shwedagon Pagoda, Inya Lake and the highest number of colonial period fin-de-siècle buildings in Southeast Asia. Yangon International Airport is connected by direct flights to major cities across Southeast Asia as well as connections to Europe via the Arabian Gulf.
