The Department

We offer Economics at IGCSE level as an option for our year 10 and 11 students, and both Economics and Business at A Level. The department has two specialist teachers, all of whom have significant experience in teaching both subjects. There are opportunities within the school for pupils to take part in the National Economic Challenge and Young Enterprise Scheme and the department regularly enters pupils in inter-school and industry competitions within China and elsewhere. The subjects are increasing in popularity, based on the support pupils receive and thus perform beyond their targets. Teachers in the department are expected to offer an after-school activity that enhances the content and experiences of students who take the subjects.

Our examination results remain impressive. In 2021, 100% of IGCSE Economics grades were A*A, 85% of AS results being A/B and at A2, both Business and Economics scored 100% A*-B. The department focus on the continuous development of independence learning has been a model in the school. Peer learning and assessment are used as part of our key classroom 

1 General Role Description:

A well-qualified Teacher of Economics and Business Studies with at least two years’ experience of teaching at Senior / High School level (UK Key Stages 3-5 or equivalent).

Key Responsibilities 

Curriculum: 

    To teach Economics and Business Studies (and General Economics and Business Studies) within the Economics and Business Studies department.

     To work with the Head of Economics and Business Studies and other staff on the development of schemes of work, helping to build opportunities for:

 Ensuring progression among all learners

 Active learning and engagement

 Assessment for learning 

 Meeting the needs of all learners, specifically through language support

 ICT 

 Enrichment and external links 

Learning: 

 To maintain up-to-date records of pupil progress across all aspects of performance 

 To ensure that your pupils make good or outstanding progress in Economics and Business Studies 

 To deal effectively with behaviour, attendance and punctuality issues 

Assessment: 

 To carry out the regular assessment and marking of pupils' work, according to the departmental and whole school assessment and marking policy 

 To keep records of student attainment and progress 

 To monitor student achievement against school and national data at individual student and teaching group level, and to take action to improve achievement and combat identified under achievement 

 To carry out assessment and feedback

Policy: 

 To attend relevant meetings 

 To undertake any other duties as reasonably requested by the Master or Head of Economics and Business Studies

 To contribute to areas of departmental development as a member of the Economics and Business Studies team

Guidance & Welfare: 

Where appropriate, act as a form tutor, fulfilling the following functions: 

 To take overall responsibility for monitoring tutees’ academic and wider progress and development, acting in line with school policies in this area;

 To review progress and support pupils in target setting and action planning; 

 To ensure that all pupils are valued and treated according to the aims of the school. 

2 Knowledge, Experience and Profile

Required Qualifications / Skills: 

  • A relevant degree (BSc) and professional teaching qualification is essential 
  • A passion for Economics and Business Studies and the ability to share this with as wide a range of pupils as possible. 
  • Excellent subject knowledge and an interest in current developments in Economics and Business Studies 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English to enable effective communication with pupils and in working relationships 
  • Knowledge of A-level/GCSE/IGCSE curriculums, their delivery and assessment The desire to put the wellbeing each pupil at the heart of what they do Excellent inter-personal skills 
  • Honesty, integrity, compassion, flexibility and a good sense of humour Strong organizational, self-management and problem-solving skills


Desirable Qualifications / Skills:

 Experience teaching A-level (or equivalent) in your subject specialism

 Experience teaching the Cambridge International Examinations IGCSE Economics and Businese Studies

 Experience teaching and mentoring EAL students
