EdTech Content Author for Non-profit

Employer: ONEBILLION

Location: Fulham, London and hybrid home working

Salary: Competitive, based on experience.

Closing date: 12 Dec 2022

This is not the usual education job. Apply if you have a knack for making learning fun, a keen interest in technology, and a passion for equity in education.

onebillion

We are an EdTech non-profit working for marginalised children. Think start-up office atmosphere, with a big impact.

Our goal is for all children to have the knowledge and passion that enables them to create, innovate and become problem solvers, whether that’s within their local communities, nationally or internationally. But first, they need the basics.

We build software to transform children’s learning in reading, writing and numeracy. All in their own language, and at their own pace. The aim of our flagship software, onecourse, is to bring children from being unable to recognise a letter or number to confidently literate and numerate.

In 2019, onebillion was announced co-winner of the $15 million Global Learning XPRIZE, following a 15-month field trial with out-of-school children in Tanzania. The Malawi Ministry of Education is currently working with a consortium of partners to scale onecourse to every primary school child in Malawi from September 2023.

The role

We are constantly striving to improve our software, and we’re now looking for the right person (rather than the right CV) to help us deliver greater learning gains and engagement. The right candidate will have an interest in EdTech and education, and must be able to challenge the status quo to contribute to onebillion’s goals.

We want to ensure that the time children spend using onecourse has the greatest possible impact on their learning, and that teachers recognise the software’s value as a tool to enhance their teaching and bring inclusive, engaging and effective learning to students.

You will:

  • Develop a deep understanding of onecourse and why it’s been designed that way, viewing it critically with a goal of continuous improvement for the child
  • Develop a deep understanding and appreciation of onebillion’s goals and priorities, and work as part of the team to achieve them
  • Absorb our philosophy and approach to learning
  • Edit existing onecourse learning units, based on internal and external feedback and a real understanding of the varied needs of the children we work with and for
  • Create new activities to address particular learning objectives, discussing with the team and briefing in-house developers and designers
  • Use our in-house software and processes effectively

Experience in the following is beneficial, but not essential:

  • Primary education, working with young children and/or primary education publishing
  • Developing or commissioning digital education content/EdTech
  • Working with, or developing content for, children with SEND
  • Project management or product development

The right candidate will be:

  • comfortable learning new software
  • confident using Excel / Google Sheets
  • creative
  • efficient
  • happy working independently
  • happy to muck in to contribute to the team effort
  • happy to change direction, iterate and try something new to get it ‘right’
  • an excellent listener and communicator, and a quick learner
  • comfortable giving an alternative opinion where it’s important to achieve the goal

And have a:

  • strong interest in equity in education and the opportunities (and risks) of EdTech
  • sensitivity for and understanding of cultural differences and similarities
  • basic understanding of software development, especially apps

Practical info

  • (Ideally) full time
  • (Ideally) starting January 2023
  • Hybrid working (at least 2 days per week in our Fulham office)
  • We’re open to receiving applications from candidates with varying levels of experience. As such, the salary is negotiable.
  • Potential for travel to support work

To apply, send the following by email via the button below to jobs@onebillion.org no later than Monday 12th December:

  • CV (max. 2 pages)
  • Instead of a cover letter, please send succinct answers to the questions below (max. 150 words each). NOTE: We will not consider any candidates who have not answered these questions.
  • What does equitable education mean to you?
  • Describe the benefits of learning to read and do maths using EdTech.
  • Describe possible negative aspects of learning to read and do maths using EdTech.
  • Describe three important factors in creating effective and engaging education content.
  • Why are you interested in this particular position?
