Salary: £28,886 - £32,068 pro rata, inclusive of London Weighting. Grade D, spine points 25-29.

Hours: 24.5 hours per week with some evening and weekend work required.

We’re looking for an organised,  proactive and passionate Educational BSL Interpreter/Qualified Communication Support Worker who will work with tutors and other relevant staff to facilitate access for deaf and hard of hearing students across the full range of City Lit courses. This includes students with complex needs and low level language.

Play a vital role in our Access, Inclusion and Study Support (AISS) department

Our Access, Inclusion and Study Support department promotes inclusive practice and provides support for students with a wide range of additional support needs. Support includes: disability support, dyslexia support and communication support for deaf students. We also provide student counselling.

Joining us as a Educational BSL Interpreter/Qualified Communication Support Worker you will:

  • Provide in class communication support and work with course tutors and other staff to facilitate access for deaf and hard of hearing students. City Lit provision ranges from short and introductory courses to longer and higher level courses up to level 4.
  • Evaluate student support needs to ensure that appropriate support strategies are put in place. This includes the modification of language and use of flexible approaches to support to  encourage students to become independent active learners.
  • Undertake any relevant administrative duties to support the AISS provision, plus related tasks which underpin the provision of support, such as liaising with class tutors and admin to support the service.

What we are looking for:

  • BSL level 6 qualified, (NRCPD-regulated) Interpreter (TSLI or RSLI) and a competency in English and Maths with a minimum level 2 qualification (GCSE grade A-C or equivalent).
  • Extensive experience of working as a communication support worker with deaf students in a support role and knowledge of issues related to education and deaf people and the ability to explain and promote understanding of these issues to teaching staff and other students.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong knowledge of Microsoft Word,  Excel and Outlook.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills with the ability to be flexible and proactive in your approach.
